p3180027 Vintage Butterick 1959 Wiggle It!

I’ve been in project mode again. When I get a bee in my bonnet about something and just have to have it, there is nothing more satisfying than being able to make it myself. So it was with this great 1959 dress.  I had an idea in mind for some sort of wiggle dress, but in a less than predictable LBD style.  There are a few vintage pattern sites I favour, but this one I found on eBay.  Comparatively the prices are very reasonable, that is unless it is a popular pattern in a popular size, so I often find bargains for around $10.00 that otherwise retail on some vintage sites for closer to $35.00  Keep in mind if you are buying patterns from eBay, to always ask their condition – whether they are complete, cut, torn and still have their instruction sheet.

I love the versatility of this pattern and have in mind several variations making something for both summer and winter, so you may see this pattern again.  This time I bought the fabric before I’d even found an appropriate pattern.   I have a habit, as most of you crafty sorts do, of always keeping one eye out for the unusual and the appealing.  So it was that I came across this satin fabric at the bottom of the bargain bin for the grand total of $7.00 a meter.   When it came to making up this dress, there were a few modern habits I did without.

Firstly, I chose not to overlock any of the edges, rather opting to stabilize each edge with a row of straight stitches before sewing it together.  Also, instead of using a fusible interfacing – which is the quick and easy route – I chose to sew it in instead to avoid any puckering or bubbling where it attached.  To get the fit right, given the tailoring and the absence of stretch in the fabric (how quickly we’ve gotten used to that), I fine tuned all the darts and tacked things as I went.

And here is the finished product getting its first outing on the town.  After all your lovely comments on this dress, I am inspired to try my hand at some more complex projects soon.  Knowing that there are many of your that either enjoy sewing or just reading about it, I’ve decided to add a MAKING section to the blog.  It is where you’ll find all the details of things I’ve made, customised and DIY tips and tricks.  Once again I’ve started by accessing some archived posts, but I’ll be adding lots more in the coming weeks. If you have any questions about this or any of my other projects, feel free to drop me a line or leave a comment.  This girl is always up for a chat.

Outfit Details: Dress – by Me, Shoes – Ana, Hair flower – Leopard Vixen Enterprises, Fragrance – Tokyo Dream.

Somewhere in the back of my closet I found a surprise today. About 3 years ago I made this dress for a party, then soon after discovered I was pregnant, (those two events were not related). It meant that this dress was relegated to the “I’ll wear it again in the future” area of the closet, and hadn’t been discovered again since. I found both the dress and a pair of suitable shoes, and was actually able to put an outfit together that felt a little more like my style even with the shoes.

The dress is made from a super stretchy lycra blend and has gold foiling in the print. I have no idea what it says ( please someone tell me if it is obscene). It was super easy to make and is super comfortable to wear. The print is like nothing I had seen before in these fabrics and I had to have it immediately.

As for the hair, I achieved this look with the help of a few hair combs to lift and push the top section into some height (no backcombing), and setting the rest in my famous pin curls for an hour or so. It turned out that I even had a matching hair flower in my stash, so a blue rose with requisite skull motive, topped the whole lot off. There is nothing better than being able to treasure hunt your own closet and still surprise yourself at the possibilities that lie within.

Pants -Take Two

Outfit Details: Silver Batwing top – Tempt, Grey high neck top – Miss Shop, Pants – by Me, Shoes – Rohde, Sunglasses – Chanel, Golden bracelets – from a Halloween treat bag!

It seems I am often heralded for my vintage style, and while I do have a great affinity with decades past, I like to make them work for me. This is why I mix my plastic children’s jewelry with 80′s couture; my hoochie heels with high collared tops and just about anything that takes my fancy. I do know my decades, my designers and my history, but I also know what suits me. So for that reason I take an eclectic view of fashion and enjoy finding myself in all my looks.
When high waisted pants first came out I tried on various commercial jeans, but nothing really looked right on me. I had a mental image of what I would look like in these amazing pants and where they might take me. But when I would stand in the dressing room all I could see was a large expanse of arse staring back at me. After years of 6cm flys, adding that much fabric to your behind takes some adjusting in the visual memory. So feeling like I had just gained a good 10 kilos, I put those pants back on the rack.

Rather than be dismayed, I decided that I could do a better job of translating my mental image to reality. I had had great successs with wide leg pants before, so why not go one step further? So I headed out to my local fabric store to pick up some stretch denim and set about drafting a pattern for these beauties. The idea I had in mind was a 1940′s casual look, but I wanted them to translate into all kinds of other styles. Much of the success or failure of this idea depends on the accessories employed in this endeavour.

So after yesterday’s blast from the past, I give you my more modern version of these pants. This is yet another way I wore them to head to a casual family barbeque on the weekend. I also paired them with the other pair of Rohde shoes I picked up, which were the higher wedge, sling back ones. (Yes, I got them both.)

studiomosaic2 A Place to Call My Own.

studiomosaic1 A Place to Call My Own.

I thought you might like a little peek into a slice of my world. This is my studio which also doubles as my guest room thanks to a nifty Ikea sofa bed. It is the first time I have had such a large and dedicated room for my projects. But it seems that no matter how large my space I never seem to have enough. I am yet to really fit out the room for its purpose, but having a large double wardrobe certainly helps. There isn’t a spare place to hang anything though as I have fabric stacks as high as I am tall.
I’ve always loved making things, even as a child. Mum was great at inventing projects to keep us kids entertained; making dolls clothes, furniture from old boxes and even a pair of pants for my teddy bear that I had to pin to him as I neglected to include a crotch! So it is a part of me that I just can’t let go. I haven’t always been able to sew. Mum was so fabulous with a needle and thread that I would simply put in a request with my amateur design sketches and viola! But after a while I figured I had better pull my finger out and have a proper crack at it. That was only just over three years ago and I’m surprised at what I have been able to achieve. I was not a natural at sewing. Design yes, but the technicalities and the math?! Not my strong suit. But in typical Leo fashion I refused to be beaten and kept at it. I do have quite a large box of failures suitable for the Hunchback of Notre Dame, but for every two failures I have now some absolute gems that I am rather pleased with.

In fact, I have a couple of newly completed gems to show you that I am saving for some special occasions this weekend. So I won’t spoil the surprise of the outfits just yet, and instead just show you where the magic happens. And from my vintage thread tin to my Hello Kitty iPod dock, you’ll be able to see just how eclectic my inspirations are.

Outfit details and cost: Black lace ruffled top – Entrace, $50 @ a designer warehouse sale, Skirt – Made by me, materials $15, Opaques – Voodoo on sale $5, Boots – Joanne Mercier, $110 on sale and 5 years old, Cuff – Made by me, more time than money, Earrings – Diva, $4.95.
Today’s outfit is based around a skirt I made for summer. I just adored this scarab beetle fabric , (it so appeals to the Egyptologist in me) and wanted to make something that looked interesting from a distance, but also had some great detail close up. The top is one I picked up at yesterdays sale, and although you can’t really see the detail here, it has a lovely lacy cravat right down the front. The cuff I had up in my etsy shop for while, but as it is my favorite of these pieces, I decided to just keep it all for myself. (If anyone is interested in this sort of thing, email me and I’ll re-list them).

We spent the day just hanging out and eating dumplings to our hearts content at a local Chinese restaurant. Miss 4 has been practicing her restaurant manners and was dying to have a chance to show them off. She had us in stitches as she watched a Chinese family with their little baby and said, “Look Mum, a Chinese baby (she is presently obsessed with China). Is his name Wilfred?” I have no idea why that name came to mind for her, but needless to say, we were highly amused by her culturally atypical choice of name.

I even had a little free time to myself today, and I have finally made that hair tutorial I have been promising. Now to make it all pretty for you, so stay posted tomorrow. The snaps below are of my latest loot. Some cheap and cheerful accessories, my bargain of the year dress and my husband’s effort at compensation, for subjecting me to a week of abject loneliness while he hotfooted it off on a business holiday.
