This Christmas I’ve been inspired to make a lot of my gifts.

I usually think this would be a nice idea, but then leave my run too late and don’t get a single thing made!  This year, I’ve decided to not only make a few things but create little tutorials on it as well, just to keep me on track. So today’s tutorial is something a little out of the ordinary – a Christmas Special Make & Do!

fancy title How to Make A Princess Treasure Box

With two little girls in my house, we look for any and all excuses to up the fanciness quotient, and decorating everyday items is one of the best ways. This week I created a Princess style (also known as Himegyaru style) Glory Box and it is a hit.  They aren’t very difficult to make, they just take patience, imagination and lots and lots of sparkle and lace.  I was going to give this box to Miss 5 for Christmas, but I like it so much I think I’ll have to make another!

Enjoy this suitably regal tutorial and make your own Princess Glory box to share… or keep!

 DIY Halloween Kitty Ears

Time for Super Happy Fun Craft Time! Just because it’s fun and with Halloween around the corner, it is a great time to pretend to make things for the little people in your life, knowing full well you really want to wear these to the supermarket! Well, maybe that’s just me, but either way here is a great fun new activity for you.  I doesn’t take mad skillz, just a few supplies, about 30minutes and the ability to follow instructions. So follow along and you’ll be able to great your own Nyan Nyan (cat) poses in no time!

Materials

*Pink felt or fabric*   *Thick pile fur fabric*

*Needle and thread*   *Elastic for head band*

*Fine picture hanging wire (optional)*

 DIY Halloween Kitty Ears

The exact materials you choose, are of course, up to you. I’m working with felt as it is a little stiffer than fabric, as well as a thick pile fur which gives the ears a good squishy appearance. The wire is optional, but if you wish the ears to be able to bend into different shapes, you will need to insert this along the way. When it comes to the actual headband attachment, you can choose to use basic elastic and sew it into a band to save money, but I’ve purchased these pre-prepared ones that have no joins and a grippy finish on the inside.

Begin by drawing and then cutting out a template to ensure all your pieces are the same size.

 DIY Halloween Kitty Ears

Position and pin your template onto the felt & cut 2. Repeat for the fur fabric. You will now have 4 pieces.

 DIY Halloween Kitty Ears

Pin 1 felt and1 fur, right sides together. Take care to push the pile of the fur towards the interior of the piece so very little escapes the seam.

 DIY Halloween Kitty Ears

Hand sew pieces together using small stitches, doubling back on them for strength. Leave most of the bottom section open.

 DIY Halloween Kitty Ears

Gently turn right side out.

This is the point that if you wish to insert wire, you need to do so. Determine the length you need and cut. Twist the two ends together to form an oval shape, then thread the wire inside the ears. Ease the wire out, allowing it to follow the edges of the inside of the ears. It doesn’t need to be perfect, but it will help you bend and shape the ears in the finished product.

Decide on the best distance placement for your ears to get just the right cuteness factor – then pin into place on your band.

Sewing through the wide, flat part of the band – tuck the open sections of the ears in together, stitching through them straight onto the band. Make small tight stitches and tie off well.

Et Voila! Go forth and spread some kitty love!

July 20095 Jazzing up the Everyday

July 20096 Jazzing up the Everyday

July 20097 Jazzing up the Everyday

When I was in Tokyo, I spent a few hours one afternoon wandering around a department stores with the best visual merchandising I have ever seen. One of the little tricks I loved was created by the girls on the Anna Sui counter, and I have been dying to use it ever since.

So when I came across this vintage AVON powder jar at the vintage fair, I knew exactly what I would use it for – and here is the result. Just using those embossed makeup pads, I layered them into the jar one at a time to create a camellia effect, and I think the results are just darling. A nice way to jazz up something so very simple, and it looks lovely on the vanity.

Do you have any great tips for V.M-ing your space?

Avas 5th Birthday2 A Unicorn Pony Party!

This weekend was the big day – Miss 5′s birthday party! My own first memories of birthdays past began at my fifth birthday.  I remember mum making a “Dolly Varden” cake from the Women’s Weekly cookbook, complete with faux Barbie inside the cake.  I remember receiving the coolest gifts from my friends and family; my first “lipstick”, a set of fashion plates (which I have since recovered via the magic of eBay) and a special dress with matching hair ribbons.  As I thought about my own fifth birthday, it occurred to me that so much of what happened on that day and the type of gifts I received, have gone a long way to shaping who I am today.  And so it was that I decided that this birthday had to be a cracker for my own daughter,  something that she would remember for the rest of her life as a fabulous pink dream.

All these intentions are well and good, but just how the heck do you pull something like this off without a team of event organisers and caterers at your finger tips? Here are my tips for making your own Unicorn Pony Party.

heart pink 16x16 A Unicorn Pony Party! Pick Your Colour

When you’re a five year old girl, you just can’t go past pink. Sugary sweet it can do your head in, so pick your shade wisely. We decided that “Musk Stick Pink” would be our shade of choice, and then applied that to everything we possibly could.  It helps if you already have a bit of a colour theme to your home decorating and can scam pieces from your own collection to help pump up the ambiance. I brought out every pink table cloth, bowl, picture frame, flower and outfit I possibly could.  Even Mr SKM got in on the act wearing a pink and red shirt!Avas 5th Birthday1 A Unicorn Pony Party!

heart pink 16x16 A Unicorn Pony Party! Carry Your Colour Theme Through to the Food

The easiest way to make your party table look fancy is to carry you colour theme over to the food.  When your catering for kids, this is 100 times easier than trying to come up with adult versions of coloured food! So we had every pink and white lolly we could think of, musk sticks, marshmallows, jelly snakes, white chocolate cover red licorice… enough to make your teeth fall out just looking at it. Savoury food was covered by those ever popular “little boys” also, reddish in colour, and the usual mini quiches, pies etc.. and for desert (as if all those lollies weren’t enough) mini pavlovas with pink whipped cream and raspberries.

Rather than staying up till midnight the night before, creating some elaborate confection that was way above my culinary skills, I decided to stick to cupcakes again this year.  I still haven’t gotten the hang of that perfect icing yet, and spent much of the previous evening licking strawberry frosting off my elbows as the piping bags continued to burst mid swirl.  They passed the taste test with flying colours though.

heart pink 16x16 A Unicorn Pony Party! Goodie Bags!

Every good party comes with goodie bags, but after such a sugar laden day, I didn’t think that sending people’s children home with yet more sweets would be the best idea. As some of you know first hand, mixing both sugar and red food colouring is akin to baby crack, so sending them home with yet another stash would have probably seen me relegated to parental purgatory.  The goodie bags are a fun, cheap and easy way to win good party points with all your guests. Once again, make sure to stick to your colour theme, but think of things that can be used over again and aren’t simply going to break or end up in land fill.  They needn’t be expensive, but just make them look pretty!

For our stash we put together little pink organza bags containing My Little Pony makeup sized bags, super cute doggie sticky note pads, scented erasers shaped like cookies, and a little Cuppa Chup lolly pop.

heart pink 16x16 A Unicorn Pony Party! The Piece de Resistance

All the best parties have one event that makes them the stuff of legends.  The stuff that shapes memories and imagination.  When I was asked for a Unicorn Pony for her birthday I knew I had a challenge on my hands. But with the magic of the internet, a little saving up, some glue and glitter; I managed to work a miracle.

Behold – The Unicorn Pony!

And now after all that, I plan to retire from partying for at least another month… until Miss One turns Two!

april 20099 When is a Mule not a Mule?

When it is a drink!

The good people at Smirnoff sent me a package, plying me with drinks and asking me to share this new / old favorite with you. And I can honestly tell you that this is my new favorite drink! It will never take the place of my G&T’s, but the old Vodka, Lime and Soda is out of here! So join me for a drink and let me show you how it’s done.

*I apologise in advance for the poor film quality, my camera is on it’s last legs.  Also beware the hamminess of this segment, I had been sampling the wares.*
