Helen McLean and I have been up to all kinds of new things recently and I’ve been dying for the chance to show you! While I’m bent over my keyboard here madly preparing to start my national tour of Vintage Style Workshops in Sydney this weekend, I thought now would be a great time to show you just how much glam we’ve been getting!

Helen McLean is already internationally renowned for her amazing pinup work, (as you know she shot my Some Fancy Ladies calendar), but it isn’t just pin up that she kills at.  Helen and I have been working together to re-create some classic Old Hollywood glamour photo shoots of late and are totally loving it!  Check out these two gorgeous ladies we’ve transformed into silver screen stars!

I’ve always wanted to create my own version of a Grace Kelly look-alike… and how amazing is this portrait?!

..

Of course, it isn’t all pin up and silver screen (although you have to admit, it’s every girls dream to look like this one day), we’ve done something you’ve never seen from me before… drum roll

We’re now also creating timeless, elegant modern glamour looks for our clients! Check out what we shot the other day..

If you’ve ever wanted to be shot as a siren of the silver screen, a pin up beauty or a timeless modern glamour queen, there has never been a better time! You’ll have me to take personal charge of your styling and hair and makeup transformation, while Helen guides you through becoming a work of art! Check out her recently re-vamped website to see what else we’ve been up to. Of course, my specialty vintage hair, makeup and styling skills are available to you outside of the photo studio too, and I’ve been busy with parties and loads of classes and tutorials. I’ve also been finishing up the wedding season here too. I have some amazing new bridal shots to show you soon. Styling vintage weddings is such an honour and a pleasure!

Even though this is a very different look for me, I really like it! I had to laugh though because even my dad had to ask, “Is that you?!” Everyone is so used to seeing me with set hair and red lips, this softer look is rather a change.  So what do you think of our new creations?

This weekend is the Mordialloc Food Wine and Music Festival I wrote about here. It’s right down by the beach and the perfect way to make the most of the last of the warm days.

Tomorrow there is even a special Salsa stage where you can dance the day away, as well as Frankie J Holden and Wilbur Wilde from 5.00pm.   The Master Chef Marque is hosting a special dinner, and there are all kinds of foods and delightful tipples on offer. So break out your sun frock and make the most of daylight savings and take your sweethearts down to the bay for the day!

single bloom One surefire way to improve yourself both inside and out!

We all know the power of words. The power to hurt, to heal, to make us laugh; but all too often this is only brought home in those negative moments when things are said that leave us smarting. The most powerful tool we have at our disposal is our words, both to change our mood and that of those around us. One of the most simple of these tools is the compliment.

When sincerely given, a compliment is the ‘little black dress’ of words for all occasions. We all like to receive a compliment, although taking them is an art many are yet to master. I find myself constantly having the muffle the self deprecation that usually follows on the heels of someones well meant words. A simple, “Thank you”, or even ” I love it too” is often all it takes to enjoy this small moment of joy that passes between the two of you. A compliment given on a more personal level, perhaps about your qualities as a friend, is often more difficult to accept with gratitude and humility; as being praised for something intangible is not common these days unless you find yourself at a wake.

I am struck by two qualities in particular when it comes to the benefits of compliment giving. Firstly, the obvious benefit to the intended recipient of bouying their mood and improving their self esteem; but also the rare connection established between two would be strangers, had one not offered this diamond amongst banalities.

Most interesting to me though, is the benefit to the compliment giver. Not just that of the inherent pleasure of making someone else feel good, but in the benefits of mindfulness and observance. If when you head out each day, you do so with an eye to look for the complimentary, the applaudable; you will without doubt find yourself surrounded by more beauty than you noticed the day before. Just as if you walked every day through a botanical garden to get to work, focused only on the stoney path ahead; but today decided to find your favourite flower amongst the weeds. You learn to be more attuned to what is wonderful, what is quiet and what is responsible for tugging that heart string.

And if that analogy is all too poetic for you, think of it like this…

Giving a compliment is like Pinterest in real life – collect the moments, things and people you love and Pin them with a compliment!

Dove oil treatment 3 How I use Dove Nourishing Oils to get the best results from my hair… and you can too!

My blonde streak appears to be on the mend!

It’s ironic that when I was growing up I had some seriously bad hair. I don’t just mean those trend driven looks that we all succumbed to, but some OMG moments that are burned into my memory. As a child I had very thick hair (I still do) and that comes with a world of problems. No matter how much I wanted to look like Louise Brookes, it was never, ever going to happen.

Sadly, my hairdresser at the time was one to make the chop and take the cash with no advice and little thought about how her disastrous actions would affect a 12 year old. And that is how I went from having long and lovely hair, into looking like a triangle headed alien character from Dr. Who. All bulk, frizz and the volume of someone who’d had an argument with an electric socket.

At the time, there were very little options available for hair taming; a bit of mouse or gel was about all we were offered. Straighteners were the only thing that could save me, but without the aid of what we have now, it was down to lying your head on an ironing board and running a hot iron over your locks while attempting not to give yourself 3rd degree burns on your face. Why am I telling you this? Because although I hated the look of my hair, it was for all intents and purposes in good condition as the regularity of heat treating was nothing compared to what we do today.

As the tools have improved, so too has the frequency with which we use them and as a result our poor hair needs more TLC. As you saw in my previous post about the condition of my hair and how I plan to save it, my blonde streak is very damaged from all the chemicals, but the rest of my hair is in great condition. Here are some excellent ways you can use Dove Nourishing Oils get your hair into shape without breaking your budget!

Dove oil treatment How I use Dove Nourishing Oils to get the best results from my hair… and you can too!

As an intensive treatment mask:

Boil the kettle with hot water and half fill a large ceramic bowl.

Use the remaining boiling water to soak a small bath towel in your sink.

In a small ceramic bowl, place 1 tablespoon of Dove Nourishing Oils. Sit this bowl inside the larger, hot water filled one so that the hot water doesn’t come over the edge and into the oil.

Cover with a cloth and leave for four minutes. This will warm your oil nicely.

*Using a microwave can create a heat too intense and damage the quality of the oil, so slow and gentle is better.

With your palms work the warm oil through your hair from the ends back towards the roots. Concentrate on the ends where the most damage is found.

Wring the excess hot water from the bath towel and use this to wrap your hair up into a turban. The heat from the oil and the towel will allow it to penetrate giving you a deep conditioning treatment.

Leave this on until the towel is cold. You can either wash the oil out at this point, or sleep in it over night to allow for an even deeper treatment. It pays to wrap your hair in a scarf so any excess oil isn’t transferred to your skin or pillow in the night.

As a heat protector and treatment:

Once you’ve washed you hair as usual, towel dry first, then apply a ten-cent sized portion of oil to your palms. Rub this around on your hands to ensure even distribution, then apply to the still damp hair, working from tips back towards the roots.

Dry and style as usual.

Dove oil treatment 2 How I use Dove Nourishing Oils to get the best results from my hair… and you can too!

As a smoothing serum:

Once your hair is styled and your left with fly aways or frizz, apply two pumps of Dove Nourishing Oils to your palms and work them together to warm the oil.

For a loose style, run your fingers through your hair and use small light strokes to finish off.

If your style is more structured, use a small amount of oil evenly distributed on your palms to smooth over your hair. Pay attention to the hairline where a little amount of oil will help smooth down those baby hairs and fly aways.

As an emergency bad weather rescue:

The size of the Dove Nourishing Oils bottle means it is perfect for keeping in your makeup bag for hair emergencies. When the weather gets wild or humid, a little of this and a simple comb is all you need to give your hair shine and control. Adding loads of hairspray will just make it crunchy and hard to comb, but simply using your hands with a tiny spot of oil to smooth it back down after an attack of the frizz, is all you need.

All that said, if you can hold off and train you hair to be washed no more frequently than every three days, you’ll notice a world of difference. Stripping the hair of nourishing oils every day will create more problems than it solves.

With the lightweight and easily absorbed formula of the Dove Nourishing Oil, you won’t have problems with limp nasty hair either. These four easy and inexpensive tips will give your hair and instant boost, and with longer term use will totally transform the hair you have into hair you love.

Ready to try this for yourself and get some amazing hair? I have some samples of the Dove Nourishing Oil to give to you! All you have to do is leave me a comment about your biggest hair disaster or regret and the top ten most creative entries will be sent the Dove Nourishing Oils to try for themselves!

P1080716 Grace Kelly Style Exhibition at the Bendigo Gallery

The remarkable V&A and Grimaldi Forum exhibition Grace Kelly: Style Icon, has just touched down here in Australia. Officially opening on the 11th March, I was fortunate to be invited to an exclusive preview of this beautiful collection yesterday afternoon. Presented by John Kelly (Nephew to Princess Grace), Kristina Haugland, (Author and Curator of Costume and Textiles of the Study Room at the Philadelphia Museum of Art) and Karen Quinlan (Director of the Bendigo Art Gallery), I enjoyed a rare insight into the life and style of Grace Kelly.

The exhibition charts the style life of Grace Kelly – Movie star, through to her evolution as a royal style icon.  The garments on display are a beautifully edited selection of the full collection (to accommodate the gallery space), and include both original garments and some strategic reproductions. The famous royal wedding dress has been on display in the Philadelphia Museum of Art since it was donated directly after the royal wedding. In too fragile a condition to travel, a meticulous replica of the gown in all its glory, forms the centre piece of this exhibition. The majority of the collection is from the palace in Monaco, the private collection of Princess Grace. I don’t wish to spoil this must-see event for you, so I have a few tantalising glimpses of what lies in store.

Each of the garments are packed and transported by an expert team, many garments transported already pinned in place on their mannequins to retain their shape. Displayed with great care behind glass and lit by soft beams, (garments can only handle up to 50 lux in order not to further degridation) the installations hold many pieces we know so well. Gowns from “Rear Window” and “High Society” hold your rapt attention as they enliven that moment in time.

Grace Kelly’s understated elegance placed her on many ‘Best Dressed’ lists as a young actress, and continued into her royal life.

“[Grace Kelly's] style set her apart..and is still something that many emulate on the red carpet today. You often see Grace Kelly wanna be’s walking down the runway, and certainly many brides; most famously Kate Middleton, have looked to her for inspiration in bridal elegance.”  Kristina Haugland

When talking with John Kelly I asked about his experience in meeting so many people who loved Grace Kelly and the overwhelming legacy she’s left with those who loved her.

“So many of the young women, the ballerinas that she has touched as their mentor and patron; they see her as having been such a great role model and having such great support. Her friends in Hollywood who just thought she was a gas and had so much fun with her… and loved her as that ‘Gracie’ that they had such a beautiful time working together. They all say how they wish they’d made more movies with her…. Most importantly to her family she was a lovely woman who took care of us and helped us. She was a wonderful person.” John Kelly (Nephew of Grace)

The collection has been touring since 2007 and is coming to the tail end of its run. Make sure not to miss this must-see window into the iconic style of Grace Kelly.
