dear weekend Dear Weekend 1.08.09

I’m currently craving colour. Colour and order. Perhaps this is a backlash from the last few days of monochromatic posting, or perhaps it is the result of spending lots of time in a fabulously merchandised, colour blocked store recently.  Whatever it is, my constant penchant for cleaning, purging and organizing is taking on yet another layer of complexity.  The desire to colour block my closet!   I’m imagining a perfect world in which I has so much storage space that I can keep every outfit and accessory together in small, harmonious colour groups.  Where pink angora sweaters brush up against musk coloured wrist gloves and hot pink patent shoes.  Of course, this is entirely impractical as I struggle to simply store everything as it is, let alone spread it out like this! (Oh the trials of a collector.. sigh..) I suppose it all stems from this weekends BIG activity – the yearly cleaning of the wardrobe.

I don’t mean the seasonal culling that we all undertake, but and honest to goodness, soap and water scrubbing. With a wardrobe full of vintage beauties, you cannot neglect their care lest a sneaky moth or twenty decide to make their home their.  After finding three holes in three separate (cashmere!) garments this week, it seems that I am overdue to wage this years war. So I got stuck into it today, only to find yet more ways to confuse the situation by wanting to make it look even prettier in the end.  Stumped for innovative storage ideas, I turned to the fountain of inspiration that is Flickr and promptly found some great OCD storage sets. Perfect.

So aside from this Everest of a task, there are a few other minor things on the agenda.

 Daily Outfit Raspberry Dream
 Daily Outfit Raspberry Dream

Outfit details: Red top – Katies (pinched from mum), Black top – Postie, Culottes – Morgan De Toi, Raspberry Opaques – Columbine, Shoes – Wittner, Headband – Groove, Red rose earrings – Diva.

Today was another cold and wet day. Mum and I had grand plans of visiting a designer warehouse sale and swanning around the streets drinking coffee. But at 9 degrees and with rain pouring down, we stopped into the sale for about 45 minutes then headed straight back home. Even then, I still managed to snag a fabulous black, flapper style dress (for $50 reduced from $500!) and a lovely black top with a lace cravat style detailing. I also picked up a couple of new earrings and a gorgeous bracelet at Diva the other day, but I wasn’t able to get a good close up of the earrings here. I’ll get some lovey shots of all this weeks loot tomorrow to share with you.

Yesterdays post seems I have struck a chord with you all. Thank you all for your insightful comments. Let me just reiterate here that I am not going on a one woman crusade against the fashion industry (who are we kidding here), but just wanting to encourage a more ‘eyes wide open’ philosophy in our buying decisions. *Edit* I also wanted to add that the reason I am singling out Bitten here is because of the combination of the price point / manufacturing issue , and the manifesto. I wonder how the women making the garments would feel when presented with their “inalienable rights”?

One of the thoughts that has come out of it, for me, is to show you how I put some of my outfits together, and just how little they actually cost and the recycled origins of many of them. I won’t break them down all the time and bore you to death, but I thought it would be appropriate to show you how I do it for posterity. So stay tuned over the weekend for a peak into the purse strings of my wardrobe.

mail 3 And The Winners Are......
Thank you to everyone who left me a comment over the last three days. While there are a few hundred that are still shyly lurking around, hopefully they will soon join the fun.
As promised, I have selected three people by random means, ( closing my eyes and pointing to a name on the overall comments list) to dress. And so I congratulate Tizzalicious, Lil Midget and K.Line.

Now, my wonderful winners; please email me a full length photo showing your figure, list any figure flaws you want to minimize, tell me a bit about your current climate and which occasion you would like me to dress you for. Then over the next few days I will post your new outfit selections here for your own personal shopping fantasy, and for everyone else to enjoy.

To be fair, I have had a few private email requests too. So if you don’t find yourself on the winners list, and are having a style crisis, feel free to drop me a personal email and I’ll see what I can do.

I can’t wait to see what I come up with!

christiansiriano Fierce, Fabulous & Flawless

Congratulations Christian on a very well deserved win of Project Runway S4!

In the now very famous words of Christian Siriano, I am aiming to make every day, “Fierce, Fabulous and Flawless.” And, yes, this is not always a feat achieved, but it is a great thing to focus your thoughts every morning.
And part of this process is waking up in a beautiful world. I have finally finished my wardrobe clear out, ( there are a few sneaky stragglers) and am now envisaging the serious makeover my whole bedroom needs. When we moved into this house almost twelve months ago, the Master bedroom was very high on the list of ‘things that need to be addressed’. Now, the decoration is O.K., (if I were a Laura Ashley circa 1988 lover with grandchildren on the way!) but it is so not me. I have been planning our boudoir for some time now, and collecting perfect pieces as I go. But I have one major covet piece that I am yet to find here in Australia; the Mirrored Chest of Drawers. If any of you know where I can find these here, please please let me know!

So in my search for the perfect mirrored drawers, I came across this gorgeous site that is simply full of pieces I’d love to see, not only in my bedroom, but my whole house. Black Orchid Interiors
in the UK, have a gorgeous selection of furniture and lighting. And while I’m in this decorating head space, I also found these two perfect pieces for my studio.247 Fierce, Fabulous & FlawlessNow I realise this is not the best ‘task lighting’ but it is strawberry-licious.

And although I certainly would have no technical use for this mannequin, it was so lovely I thought it deserved a mention.

So back to my original point of this post; if you want to wake up each day and be “Fierce, Fabulous and Flawless”, it can’t be in a room with clothes piled on the floor, un-made beds and bad floral wall paper. It’s not a question of funds, just make your room a place of inspiration and organised enough to find your hair straightener in a hurry!

anniversary+2008+009 Happy Anniversary Baby!

It is mine and my beloveds wedding anniversary today. It is our 4th, but being that we were married on the 29th February (in Las Vegas no less), it is the first year we actually get to celebrate on the day. So it was yet another great excuse to celebrate with Yum Cha. mmmm… We tried a venue that was my old favorite but was recently bought out, and were pleasantly surprised. The Gold Leaf in Burwood, Melbourne; is simply fabulous for a top quality, quick and nicely priced Yum Cha. they were even able to fit us in, pram and all, without a booking. They have a great selection of dumplings, (my great weakness) and the mango pudding is simply divine.

And why all these pictures of food from a fashion girl you ask? Well, I was feeling somewhat sartorially challenged today. After working my way through the great wardrobe clean out,(which I still haven’t finished – sigh) I have discovered that I am bereft of anything that fits for this winter! Oh dear, and we all know what that means don’t we? Serious shopping time! I always love it even more when it is seriously justified. I’m always much less likely to get a case of shoppers guilt. So remembering that we are coming into winter here, I would love to hear your suggestions for ‘must have’ pieces this season; because half the fun is planning what to buy!
