When I was visiting a friend last week she showed me a beautiful pair of enamelled bluebird earrings she’d just inherited from her mother. Tiny, perfect and just so vintage charming. There are certain images that strongly evoke a feeling of the 50′s and this is one of them. The Blue Bird of Happiness isn’t something we see so often these days, occasionally on Christening jewellery, and Sailor Jerry tattoos, but other than that, she’s all but disappeared from the realm of modern accessories.  For a little while there I saw loads of bird imagery in necklaces, wall decals and all manner of hip interior pieces; but an actual ‘blue’ bird not so much.  So I’ve been hunting.

As usual, Etsy has a gorgeous selection of vintage blue bird pieces, from linen to jewellery.

And a quick search on eBay uncovers some real stunners.

No hunt for vintage jewellery would be complete without a visit to Ruby Lane.

It is this last little guy with his Disney eyes that has stolen my heart though. Might be time for an early Christmas present, after all, these are heirlooms! icon wink When Blue Means Happy

DSC05953 Sweet as a Sundae

There was a very special tea party to attend the other week. A tea party you’ll see and hear more about a little later, but first up its all about the outfit.

Lolita styles are not something I’ve really added to my wardrobe.  I love the colours, the frills, the prints; but I also know that for me they just don’t work head to toe.  So as usual, I’ve taken the elements of what I love about the style and worked it up to create something very ‘me’.

DSC05926 Sweet as a SundaeDSC05929 Sweet as a SundaeDSC05940 Sweet as a Sundae

The whole outfit was so much fun to put together and so much fun to wear.  And the hair? Well that is the result of setting small pin curls for 24 hours then letting them go wild!

DSC05944 Sweet as a SundaeDSC05969 Sweet as a Sundae

The skirt is by Japanese Gothic Lolita brand Body Line which I actually found here in Melbourne at the One Day in Paradise store.  I loved the pink and black striping as well as the cotton lace detail and tulle underskirt.  Apparently it can be worn with petticoats underneath too, but it had enough volume for me as is this time.  The print is all fruits and icecream with little flecks of glitter here and there too, as well as black satin ribon woven through the hem of the lace.

Where did it all come from? Surprisingly, other than the skirt, I already had all these other pieces in the wardrobe.  It just required a fresh set of eyes looking through the drawers to pull it all together.

DSC05867 LMFF and what I wore

Loreal Melbourne Fashion Festival is rather a big deal here in Melbourne.  With not only a great main runway line up but also a full and rich cultural calendar.  Hence why my posts have been a bit slow this week, as I’ve headed out to as many things as my legs would carry me and still be able to recognise my own children at the end of the week!  Fashion week is a brilliant time to combine both business and pleasure, seeing not only some of the best and brightest talents out there but also to catch up with delightful friends and wear some of my favorite things all at once!  I’ve had only a little time to photograph what I wore this week, but this outfit was a little bit special.

The talented Gabrielle from Hoplessly Devoted, created this showstopping musk pink, dupon silk headpiece for me to wear and show stop it did. Named the “Marie Fascinator”, it has great body to be able to mould the bow into the shape you want, and features beautiful knife pleating across the front.  I had planned to wear it with another outfit this Saturday, but just couldn’t wait, so last minute I teamed it with a simple black dress and bustle belt for a little Fashion Week fun.

If you look closely, you’ll see the evidence that I do really take all my own photographs for this blog.

And yes, LMFF so far has been a blast. I have some new favorites (Nevenka) and some old favorites that continue to blow me away (Aurelio Costarella).  There is just so much to see and to be inspired by.

Aurelio Costarella indulges my love of strong tailoring; of 1940′s silhouettes, waists, peplums and strong shoulders. Their winter collection is simply delicious and appeals to my sense of decadence and luxury.  They are garments you just want to breath in as they fill your senses with berry tones and kitten soft trims.  If you’d like to see more of the events, the who’s who and some beautiful photographs, head on over to OhJamie (who also happened to be my front row date one evening along with brilliant celebrity stylist Philip Boon) and catch a glimpse of his stellar shots.  For a full round up of LMFF by some of Melbourne’s favorite local bloggers check this out .

I know some of you have asked for the little details of these nights, so here are a couple of pics of just what one takes away from these shows other than an incredible lust and impending credit card debt!  The ubiquitous goody bags.

DSC05914 LMFF and what I wore

Loreal knows that after all the air-kissing  our lips may need a little plumping to restore them to their former glory, and the tresses need some TLC after a weeks worth of super styling.

DSC05917 LMFF and what I wore

Being able to rest one’s stilettoed feet between shows is critical, as is keeping track of just who is showing so that you can find that lust worthy gown in store.

DSC05912 LMFF and what I wore

How did they know I love glitter and red lips? Nice one Loreal!

DSC05919 LMFF and what I wore

Keeping it chic, LMFF put together this great little hold all for the mags, the lippy, the whole fashion week lot as ruining the lines of your outfit with a shopping bag is just not on.

Outfit Details

Dress – Table Eight (a very long time ago)

Bustle Belt – CMK

Tuxedo Cuff – Somewhere in Bangkok?

Headpiece – Hoplessley Devoted “Maire” silk fascinator

Now please excuse me whilst I go and tackle a weeks worth of photos!

daily outfit Daily Outfit Vintage Girly

All of my favorite things – All at once! Monday and Tuesday this week were unseasonably cold. Wind, rain the whole box and dice.  So many poeple hate that about Melbourne, but I love it – it means I get to play with some of my favorite winter pieces all year around!

 Daily Outfit Vintage Girly

Can I just say I LOVE this outfit?  The dress was a fantastic find at a vintage fair.  It is a classic Misses (that is young lady’s) piece form the 1960′s.  It isn’t the most ideal fabric, as at the time all those doddgy man made fabrics were all the rage.  But the detail!  The little lacework collar that looks like frosting on baby blue gingerbread. The box pleating and the big covered buttons.  A brilliant dress found for the brilliant price of $40!

One of the best things about this dress is that it lends itself to being styled in so many different ways, it just depends on what side of the bed I wake up on.  Today’s outfit inspiration wasn’t actually the dress though, but these GORGEOUS bangles from Friends of Couture.

Aren’t they just like coconut ice lollies?!

I am also in total love with this new lipstick from Loreal in their Sheer Gelee range. It is the perfect Cherry shade, goes on smooth and soft, stays moisturising and even smells like raspberries! You can read a little review of it here over at Beauty Swatch.
