A Nuffnang sponsored post in which you can WIN a personal stylist, me and $1000 spending money!!!

candicebannerfinalswirl 300x68 A Personal Stylist and Spending Money Shopping Heaven!

When I tweeted the other day that I was heading into Westfield to experience a personal styling session, a great cry went up of “Oh no, you’re not going to loose your vintage styling are you?” Let me assure you that nothing could be further from the truth, but I was indeed off on an adventure.

As a part of their new Personal Styling services, Westfield invited me to spend the morning with one of their top stylists and experience what they have to offer. And what fun we had!

.

Candice DeVille with the Westfield Stylist A Personal Stylist and Spending Money Shopping Heaven!

.

When I met up with Jo my stylist, I’ll admit to feeling some trepidation about what awaited me. I knew that the khaki trend and I were not on friendly terms, and the leopard print body suits and I were experiencing some generation gap issues; but I was ready to put myself in her skilled hands and see what resulted.

Our first and most essential port of call was to stop for a much-needed coffee and a bit of a chat about my style.  I knew I wasn’t going to be the easiest client in the world, but that is surely one way to test out someone’s skills. Jo and I talked about my style, key elements that are important to me, my rules for ‘never’ (thigh high hems for instance), pieces that are missing from my wardrobe and trends I’d like to experiment with.  To my mind, the biggest benefit of using a personal stylist like Jo is the knowledge they can send you away with.  Not just a simple, “oh cute top!” but in teaching you about your body type, what works, what doesn’t and why.  And with that aim in mind we set out to find some cute ensembles that fit my personal style brief, but also to show you what didn’t work for me and why.

We started out at Forever New, which is full of leopard print, nudes and super soft knits this season. I always fall in love with their advertising images and the overall look of the store, but falter when I see the hemlines. Still, we decided to see what creative combinations we could come up with. And this was the winning Forever New ensemble.

I’d found this lovely nude beaded dress with a strong 1920’s vibe, but it was cut a good 6 inches above my knee! It was also far too straight up and down for my figure, so we made a few key additions. Finding another ribbon trimmed skirt, we added that underneath, crinoline style, to give it length and volume. Then we used a wide beaded belt to give the dress more waist definition. Topped of with a cropped and beaded angora cardigan, it all came together to create a look that was more elegant princess than tall slender flapper (which I clearly am not). We liked the look, but knew it wasn’t quite on the money, so the adventure continued.

As we wandered around a few more stores, Jo and I decided we would show you just what it is a stylist does for you.  It isn’t just taking you to a random bunch of stores and finding pretty things, (you can do that yourself), but it is in finding out the science of shape, colour and finish that make pieces work for you; or not.   So I decided to be brave and take some shots of the Sad outfit as well as the Happy outfits and what the difference was.

.

.

I’ve never worn a lace dress (being scared by Madonna in the 80’s), but wanted to try out this one in Cue.  But as you can see, some very small details make very big differences. The pic on the left has the sleeves sitting right on top of the shoulder, not at all flattering for my broad shoulders but the pic on the right has them spread out to make a little cap.  Although the difference is actually about 2cm in reality, the overall effect is very different.

But it wasn’t just the sleeves that made a huge difference; let’s see what happens when we add a belt to define the waist.

.

.

I happen to have a long torso, as Jo quickly picked up seeing me in this dress. And as I love the hourglass shape I want to make sure my waist is always defined, but can you see what a difference is made by where I wore the belt?

.

cue plaid dress with different width belts A Personal Stylist and Spending Money Shopping Heaven!

.

It isn’t just where you wear the belt, it’s the width as well.  This plaid dress came off the rack with the belt on the left.  It does nothing for me and nothing for the dress, but switch it out for a wider version and yes!  (Excuse the dishevelled hair, lots of change room shenanigans here..)

Thinking beyond the way something comes off the hanger opens up a world of possibilities. I really liked this plaid taffeta dress, but look what happened when we undid the zip a bit and pinned the neckline differently.

.

Total win!

But what about colour? Most of us think we know what suits us and often won’t go near other colours. Sometimes we put something on and think it’s all wrong, but is it the shape that’s the problem or the colour?

.

.

Both cute looks, but the punchy colour on the left is infinitely better on me. Jo knew we could make this even better by taking that same winning colour and picking another shape.

This was my absolute favourite outfit of the day. The colour, the shape, the balance… and all still very much a ‘me’ look.

  3. I need a personal styling session because….at the moment I am wearing pyjamas around the house because I have nothing else to wear. I spend so much time looking after the kids (4 daughters that I home school) and running a house and helping my brother with his school work (he lives with us & is doing his VCE). When I do go out I am always in mismatched clothes and my hair is a mess. I am surprised I manage to find two shoes the same! To top it all off my hubby is out of work, so no shopping budget for me to fill in the gaping holes in my wardrobe!

      Hi Mrs McAwesome,

I was in a somewhat similar position last year with a new born baby and an intelligent but slack brother doing VCE. I just wanted to encourage you by saying that he got through VCE with an 84 ENTER. And he is now doing his first semester of his first preference university degree. He even got his license yesterday! I think I was more nervous about his ENTER than my own!

It was hard work but rewarding. Being a sister/mum is extremely difficult!!

I admire you for your sacrifice.

I’d love to win a Westfield styling session because as a uni student,I lack the money for stylish clothes.I’ve dropped into the ‘uni dressing rut’ that I said I never would-jeans and tees:( I want to dress beautifully all of the time, and stop the casual blah that I wear right now.

Thanks for the opportunity, I have my fingers crossed.

  5. I definitely need a stylist. I have no sense of fashion (according to my partner… hmmm) and always so sloppy. Basically, I do not shop enough as a female and always wearing the same week in and out. That is rather strange for a female but I do spend most of my money on FOOD and Ingredients. I believe that food and fashion can work hand in hand. And this is a part that I will love to explore a little more and hopefully working with you, we can bring the two closer together.
Having said that, I am still wearing clothes from Uni days and not as a professional…. So pick me. I need help. A revamp of wardrobe and a motivation to be more fashionable.
    Please and thank you!

    My entry :)

I’m plus size babe, love the vintage silhouette too,
I have to shop on line, the exception is the shoe.
This little ditty is really a personal vent,
I am fed up of looking for my size and finding nothing but a tent.
I need a personal shopper Miss Candice Deville,
I need the help from Westfield and to avoid a great big bill.
So find me something flattering, that cinches in the waist,
Show me Westfield caters for me and does it all with taste.

I need a personal styling session because at 28 I have no style. I lost it somewhere between 22 and 25 and I’ve really love to find it again.

At one time I loved dressing up, my mum would come to visit take one look at me and say ‘where are you going looking so nice’ usually it was only to do the shopping or a movie or just down the street but I always made an effort.

I want to find myself again.

The reason I NEED a session is because I can truthfully say no one has ever said to me: “Oh wow, I LOVE your style”. (or anything close for that matter!!)
Thanks for the chance to win!

  9. Sharni says:

Once upon a time there was a girl called Sharni who fled to the Bright Lights of the City to make her fame and fortune. She worked for the big corporations, sipped on cocktails, browsed beautiful shops and had gorgeous clothing at her fingertips. The bright lights of Oxford Street woo’d her, she choregraphed drag shows and tried to meet a man via the Share Accom ads…… She closed her eyes one night and when she awoke a Kookaburra tapped on her window and laughed at her. She glanced outside and a tumbleweed frolicked past, mockingly.
She was in a One Horse Town, there were no shops! She looked over and discovered she was in bed with a Cowboy and she was to have his child. Fast forward two years and the Cowboy, The Son and The Girl are still in a One Horse Town. The glamorous clothes of yesteryear no longer fit, she swapped her pencil skirts for Cowboy’s jodphurs! But not all is lost. An inner tranquility and sense of happiness was born in the One Horse Town, a sense of self that is undeniable. Her only wish is that her inner happiness and style could be reflected on the outside by winning this glorious prize.

  10. Laura says:

Wow – having a stylist seems so decadent but we have all seen Trinny and Susannah work their magic with shape, colour and cut. I would love to have some help and guidelines as I’m rocking the vintage look as much as possible (around school runs, studying, being a general slave etc etc) BUT I don’t think I deserve it more than the woman who is home schooling FOUR CHILDREN as well as looking after her brother!! My vote goes to her (and my hat’s off to her as well!!)

  11. Beckiejo Jolley says:

I would love this opportunity as i am about to have all my hair cut into a pixie cut & would love to know how to create some beautiful feminine Autumn/Winter looks with hats & accessories. xxx Beckiejo

  12. I need a personal stylist because I think I’ve woken up to the hard fact that certain elements of my wardrobe need changing. I’m in my early thirties now, I can’t get away with grungy t-shirts, skinny jeans, and knee-high boots anymore, like I did in my twenties. I was a devotee of Trinny and Susannah for many years and do know what sort of clothes suit me, but even they’re starting to scare me now. A stylist might be honest when a friend may not be. And if they can find me a pair of ballet flats that don’t scuff within the first week, I’ll fall at their feet and worship them.

  14. Erica says:

Looking after a husband (cooking, cleaning etc), and holding a full time job where I like to look nice, it is sometimes difficult to find things that suit my plus size frame. Smaller on top than on bottom, and tall to boot means that usually I can be found in jeans and a top, with some cute jewellery, but not a lot else. I would love to find some feminine clothes (dresses I love, but don’t wear!) that suit me, and my style, and make the husband go – “WOW”. Because at the moment if I ask him if I look ok, all I get is “Yeh”.
Most of all I want to look in the mirror and go “WOW”, because every girl wants to look nice.

  15. Alessandra says:

I need this styling session as at almost 38 years of age I have sadly lost my mojo, my sexiness and if I’m totally honest, MYSELF! Having had a baby 22 months ago I’ve somehow lost my ability to dress myself in a cool, pretty way, instead I seem to put all my fashion sense into dressing my daughter. I’ve chosen to be a stay at home mother all this time but it seriously seems to have come with the pricetag of losing who I am. Not just for myself but for my daughter I would like to get my “groove” back so I can be a great role model for her.

Gosh, I long for the days when I can look in the mirror again and like what I see!

    Thanks for the opportunity. xx

  16. Fiona says:

I need a personal styling session because I am stuck wearing what I used to wear in uni when I was at least a dress size if not more smaller., and I know I’m doing it wrong, I just don’t know where to start :(

  17. Rusty Hoe says:

A makeover/stylist would be bliss. I’m nearly, cough38cough, and have been stuck at home since the end of 2007 thanks to crappy health issues. I used to love fashion pre-sick, well still love it, just getting to leave the house, medical bills, and one wage have put paid to that.

My current wardrobe consists mainly of pjs or trackie dacks and I think I got my hair cut in about May last year, I think. My skin tone, body shape and hair have all changed since I became sick so I’m not even sure what even suits anymore. Hell, I haven’t even brought a new bra since I got sick. Now I look in my wardrobe of old beautiful clothes and shoes that I once wore daily and haven’t got a clue what to wear. Dressing has become a chore. It’s like I lost my fashion mojo when I became ill. I’m sure it’s hiding somewhere, just don’t know where.

My 16 year old son is doing his Deb in mid-May and I’d love to look and more importantly, feel like I used too when we do the mum and son dance, rather than making him look like he’s dancing with the pasty, frumpy, bride of Frankenstein.

Thanks for the great opportunity, I’m sure there are loads of us who would enjoy this.

As a young woman who has recently lost some weight and is feeling more self-confident, I find myself constantly buying clothes that are ill fitting or make me look a lot older than I am. I just feel that I am unwilling to take risks! I find dressing for work enjoyable but find social outings really difficult as it seems so hard to put outfits together that represent my age and who I am.
    Thanks SKM!

  19. You always look amazing but the style session did wonders! She must have a really good eye and picks things to suit the person’s individual style. I could really use this! I work from home consulting and live in jeans and a tee shirt – boring. When I go out of the house I put on some red lippy and usually a vintage skirt that I have sewn. I need an update! I’m starting part-time work in a management position and it looks like most of the girls there are jeans and no makeup types. That’s fine but I don’t want to fall into that trap and look like a schlump! Please help!

  20. I’ve been going to vintage hair and makeup workshops for a while now and I think I have it down pat! To buy authentic vintage clothes is very expensive so I have to try and make do with modern alternatives.
I would appreciate the help of Miss Candice and a Westfield stylist to help me learn how to turn modern styles into classic vintage attire. I’ve got the rolls under control, now its time to get the fashion skills under my belt.

  21. Shell says:

I feel I deserve a Westfield Personal Styling Session because I’ve just spent the last year and a half living back with my parents, with my partner and our 2 gorgeous pups while we saved every penny we could for our own place. I can’t remember the last time I went shopping for an item especially for me…And anyone, in my opinion that can survive moving back home with a partner, 2 dogs and still is sane, deserves to be spoilt!

  22. Genevieve says:

There was once a little girl whose parents never had enough money for more than the essentials. Her dad died when she was little and her mum was busy raising four kids and working at the same time. It was hard to make ends meet and often this little girl had to wear hand-me-downs from her brothers.

As she got older, this girl still didn’t have enough money for a lot of clothes. At school, she was teased for wearing the wrong brands and the wrong styles. Even when she had the money, this girl never got it right.

Now grown up, our young lady has no idea how to dress herself. She often feels out of place, wearing jeans when others are wearing pretty dresses. Things she does have are ill-fitting or unsuitable. She watches people like Super Kawaii Mama who just seem to ‘have it’ and wonders how she can be like them.

  23. kirsty says:

I need a personal styling lesson because I struggle to find clothes that fit and flatter my shape.

Being 5’2 with a small top half and a larger bottom half makes it difficult to find clothes that fit properly – particularly pants and jeans – the bane of my existance.

I have a wardrobe full of clothes, but I am often struck with what to wear because many of my clothes don’t fit properly or flatter my shape, complexion or make me look either alot younger or older than my 24 years.

    Thanks Candice :)

  24. Esz says:

Well I wont lie about it – I don’t have a sad story about how I don’t have money for clothes or lost my fashion mojo….When in fact it is the opposite..I’m discovering the whole new world of sewing and after years of floundering in my early twenties, I feel that I’m finally finding my style.

Where I need most assistance however is with accessories and that extra level of polish that takes a great dress from “wow, cool dress” to “OMG that outfit!”

This is where a personal stylist and an impeccably polished lady such as yourself would take me that step further towards perfection. ;-)

This post of yours has actually been very helpful in showing how such small differences as having your belt two inches higher on the waist can have a powerful effect on your overall look.
Its these little tweaks and plays with proportion that I would love to learn the most.

So I’m hoping this isn’t a comp for the worst dressed girl out there, but for the one with the most enthusiasm towards refining and creating her own sense of style :-)

  26. Srednivastar says:

I need a personal styling session because, after going through a significant portion of my life being teased about my appearance (being a teenager of short stature with small breasts and broad hips wasn’t fun) I am only just now, as 24, learning to accept my body for what it is and trying to take pride in my appearance. After so many years of holding a “why bother?” attitude I have now discovered that I have no idea how to dress. At all. I buy almost all my clothes on the internet because I find clothes stores strangely intimidating, but so often the clothes turn up and just don’t suit me, so I end up wasting a whole lot of money. Help!

  27. Great post SKM! I especially love how you’ve shown what a difference something like where you wear your belt or what colour you choose makes…

I’m not normally one for contests as I am a rather unlucky person, however this one caught my eye.

So I do hope you’ll consider me, as I’d love some advice on how to dress like a real lady, not a lady’s hobo-slave girl.

I feel that I could use the westfield voucher stylist because…until a few years ago I was the biggest tomboy and lived in jeans sneakers and hoodies and never could figure out “my style” then discovered beautifull vintage and rockabilly styles!! Since then I have slowly been building up a more classic 50′s wardrobe with some key pieces of gorgeous items but cant quite afford to buy a whole bunch of clothing all at once especially since budget is tight with saving for a house and getting married! I have just started to nail what suits my figure as I am and AU size 14-16 and started enjoying dressing more feminine and girly. My Hobby of making pretty retro rockabilly accessories has also inspired this transition! So to put it frankly to have some cash to vamp up my wardrobe as well as get the professional advice on what suits and flatters as well as being practical in my everyday and work life would be an extra boost in my life:)

It would be great to win a personal stylist session as I have just moved to Melbourne from inland NSW and feel like I am in desperate need of some styling assistance and a new wardrobe. 38. Ellen says:

Hi SKM – I have really been enjoying your blog:)

I would love to win a personal stylist because to be honest before I saw this I thought they were just for tall, skinny women who wanted to be ‘It girls’. I love the way even you (who already has such a defined style and sense of self) were able to learn from this experience and I would love to do the same.

I am a stay at home mum so I would be looking for a new mummy uniform – easy to wear pretty clothes that inspire confidence in any sitauation:)

  39. Tessa says:

My shopping experiences mostly end frustratingly empty handed and teary.

I’m a young mum struggling to accept my ‘new’ body. Sure, I read Trinny and Susannah, but what I really needed was for them to step through the pages of the book and tell me just which body type I was and what looks good on me. I find it difficult to look at my body objectively and determine the best length, cut, style and colours to flatter my figure. I’m tired of people assuming I’m pregnant and I’m tired of squeezing myself into my pre-pregnancy clothes.

The 1940s are my favourite fashion era but I lack the confidence to to pull off the sort of outfits that I admire on someone else. I want to take more risks but I need help and confidence. After seeing the photos of your shopping spree and knowing your style, I know this experience would really help.

I can’t think of the last time I went on a self-indulgent shopping spree. I wouldn’t have spent $1000 on fashion in the past four and a half years of marriage collectively. So sure, I wouldn’t say no to the voucher, but mostly I really want some good advice! Candice please show me how to shop!

  40. Em says:

Why would I love a personal stylist session? That’s easy – I had a baby ten weeks ago and as a less-than-wealthy single Mum I am struggling to find things to wear that fit, are affordable and meet my vintage sensibilities… I’m a 1940s and 1950s fanatic but my body is not what it was pre-bub so getting into my faves isn’t exactly do-able (and I don’t know if it ever will be), not to mention that I need a more practical, baby-friendly yet still-make-me-feel-cute/glamorous/sassy/all-of-the-afore-mentioned wardrobe at this point!
    Fingers crossed :)

So if I get this right, we get to win YOU in this competition. That’s a pretty good prize, how long do I get to keep you for :-)

Seriously though, I think guys are always excluded from these things, and we need styling tips the most. I need to win the Westfield Style Session so that yourself and the stylist can get me out of my geeky Threadless t-shirts, cargo shorts and runners into some fashionable clothing so that I can look cool around town. You will be able to reinvent me and give the humble engineer a reputation of being fashionable and elegant rather than awkward and boring.

If all of that didn’t convince you, I’ll agree to wear a dress.

Thanks for running the competition. I look forward to seeing you help reinvent the winner, hopefully that person will be me.

A personal stylist would shed a fun and fresh light into my knowledge of the fashion world. This would ensure my money is not spent on unnecessary fashion items which I will wear once in my life only for my poor clothing to find its way to the dustbin! Further, I need a personal stylist so I know what to do with the multitude of clothing in my wardrobe (something that involves NOT chucking it away).

I would LOVE this opportunity. Even after losing over 20 kilos, I’m still considered Plus Size and honestly that is ok with me. The problem is I have absolutely NO style what so ever. I have no idea how to show off the AMAZING curves that I know I have. Clothes for me are foreign and completely intimidating. I would love to walk into a shop and know what does and doesn’t work for me and not feel overwhelmed by what should be an exciting thing for a 28 year old women. I’ve never been excited by shopping or clothes, because I just don’t know what to do with them.
    HELP ME !!!!

  45. Nicole says:

I’m a recent uni graduate going into my first professional job. I’m having trouble buying clothes that are appropriate for work but also reflect my personal style, as well as being age appropriate. I would really love the help of a personal stylist to help a lady out!

This was such a fun post! I love all your posts and photos but it was such a treat to see you experimenting and figuring out how to get modern pieces to look more vintage. Thanks for sharing!

I’ve got two kids who never let me shop,
the two year old wails if I dare to stop!
the eight year old rolls his eyes and “hmmmphs” in despair,
    half dressed in the changeroom,
    I’m not getting anywhere!

You know I’ve just turned 40,
but I still feel like a fox!
Would dearly love to strut again
    in some outfit that rocks!

Meanwhile you will see me, maybe at Northland,
impatient toddler crying and pullling at my hand.
I’ll be that jeans and t-shirt mum, who looks like she needs a beer
and is putting off her glamourous dream for another year!

  48. Emilie says:

Simply put? Because every time I go shopping, I come out with a black top. And really, there is only so many black tops one should buy. That is why your reflection about strategically using colour resonated with me. I also lost a fair bit of weight last year and I need to learn how to dress my new shape. I think that a session with you and a stylist would be worth flying from SA!

  49. Amanda B. says:

I am really more Joan Holloway than Betty Draper, you know the buxom redheaded variety! My job requires that I wear a man’s uniform for my working week, making it hard to channel my inner “joan”. Thank god for days off when I can let her loose! A stylist, and your kind self, would help me get in touch with my inner siren, and tailor her appropriately without looking matronly, staid or tragically middleaged and suburban! Help me in my quest to land my very own Don Draper. Many thanks x

I need a personal stylist because I own one, just one party/going out dress. And I want to go out more!! I traipsed around the entire Chadstone shopping centre trying to find just one suitable dress and failed miserably. Clearly I need some professional assistance, and fast!!!
