How to Create The Perfect Winged Eyeliner
Yay! Finally it is tutorial time again!
This time around I’m going to show you that long promised tutorial on how to use liquid liner to create a simple, retro, winged liner look. This is a great starting point for beginners and those of you that don’t have such a steady hand. You can use this same technique to bump it up a notch and go for a heavier Amy Winehouse style of liner or keep it a more subtle Marilyn Monroe style wing.
Enjoy!

This is an amazing tutorial. I love the look. Seriously though, how long does it take you to do that? I’m so slow (doing my own, vastly inferior method) that I just can’t get the motivation to get any better at it!
K-Line: Without all the stuffing around to film it, it takes me about one minute or less total to do both eyes, but then I have had a lot of practice!
Oh, I can’t watch it on your page (embedding disabled by request), so am heading over to you tube…looking forward to checking it out. Lorri xx
Lorri: Oh? It is showing up here for me.. so I wonder why you can’t see it? Let me look into it.
oops, seems to be working now.
Wow, that looks amazing! I am a beauty lover, but have never been able to master this technique (albeit I don’t practice as much as a should!) I will definitely try out your method of starting from the outside first, as I’ve always started from the inside. You have such a steady hand – I shake all over the place!
Holly: And here was I thinking I was pretty shaky! It was very hard to try and put it on with the camera so up close to my face and blocking my view in the mirror. At least you won’t have that obstacle to contend with.
Thanks some great tips that I’m going to run off and try right now while my 2 yr old is sleeping!
Awesome! I love the look of eyeliner but I’m a total eyeliner-phobic, mainly because I’ve never been shown how to use it properly. No, thanks to you, I’ll be able to face my fears head-on, or eye-on, something like that.
Thanks!
you make it look so easy! i’ve never been able to keep my hand that steady the fews times i’ve attempted liquid eyeliner. are felt tip liners any easier to work with?
Daisy: Personally I hate felt tip liners. I find that it is much much harder to control the line thickness and give it a clean edge. They just don’t bend or load the same way. This one is by Rimmel and it is pretty great for a cheap brush liner.
I realy love your blog!
today i found this site, and it looks amazing
Sorry for my bad english u.u
Kisses!
And my best wishes ^_^
Van: Thank you! <3
thanks for sharing the tips!
I’ve always wanted to buy a liquid eyeliner for my oily face but dare not to as I don’t know how to use it.
After watching this video,I have the urge to grab one now!
Thank you…love it!
Gorgeous!! Wondering what mascara you use? xx Lucy
Lucy: I use a few different brands including Loreal Telescopic for everyday, I love the Chanel mascara, but I also find that the Boujoris one does an excellent job.
Thank you so much for this. I have always worked with a pencil as I just never liked the idea of the felt tips but I’ll have to give your idea a go. Should it always be Black?
Atomic Mum: Not necessarily, for light blondes I use a brown, but for me I always use blue black.
I must try the liquid liner – that Rimmel one looks cheap enough to take a pot-shot with. I’m using a L’Oreal gel liner at the moment which has a fantastic black that is very opaque and lasts all day – I think my brush isn’t that flash though as its one of those angled ones and it’s near impossible to get a nice wing.
Great video SKM. I have always had trouble with this but after watching this ,and a couple of practices, I’m wearing it at work right now! ^_^
I was wondering what eyeshadows/base you use in your lids for this?
Ciao! x
Lita: From memory it is Revlon’s matt range in the beige colour. An excellent makeup bag staple!
ThankS
I’ll have to have a look, and most likely make a purchase too! ^_^
Hello SKM,
Thanks so much for this tutorial – I’ve been applying my liquid eyeliner as per your directions now and I’m finally nailing the cat’s eye thing! I’d been botching it for years by pulling the eye skin taught, which didn’t have the right natural line. I’ve not mastered it yet as I still need to wipe a few times (at the office I’m not a fan of the Amy Winehouse!!) but it’s so much better than before.
What’s your view on Brown mascara though? I have olive skin and really dark eyes and naturally black lashes, but usually wear brown liner or silver gray for day time and black more for night. Because my lashes are naturally long I feel a bit ‘Luna Park’ face sometimes with black mascara….
M
Sharp Marzipan: I guess that depends on the look you want. Generally I avoid it as it doesn’t have the drama that a good retro look needs, but if you have very fair hair, then the contrast of brown is enough to create the look. So I guess it depends on how ‘wow’ you want to go.
SKM:
This is wonderful! I’m having a retro-styled wedding on the 29th, and unless my stylist shoots me at my appointment today, this will be the eyeliner technique I use. You have been such an inspiration for my look for this event. Provided that everything goes according to plan, I’ll send you pics from the prelim hair appt tonight!
Have a glamorous day!
