When I flew out to Hobart last Friday morning at 7am, the last thing I wanted to do was spend ages getting ready at the crack of sparrows o’clock. We’ve talked about how to dress for travel before, yet it seems that this is one activity that people place on a par with going to the gym when it comes to what they wear. So I thought this time I’d give you my real world example from this shot that Mr SKM took on my way out the door at 6am.
Yes, it was a vintage weekend so the outfit did have a serious 1940′s tone going on, but other than that, I can tell you with certainty this this is no less comfortable than wearing a track suit for travel.
.

Outfit Details
Dress – 1970′s Perri Cutten woollen knit
Belt – made from vintage buckles and modern band
Stockings – Compression stockings for warmth and comfort in freezing Hobart weather
Petticoat – (unseen) 1950′s silk full slip
Shoes – Lucia Rossi satin finish basic pumps
Gloves – vintage woollen felt
Hat – 1940′s felt afternoon hat
Earrings – 1950′s pearl screw on’s
Hair – Side sweeps with the rest in a net to stop it getting messed up
I also took a coat that I could wear over my knees in the plane and put on when disembarking.

It certainly wasn’t a difficult outfit to put together. I didn’t have to match colours, worry about many accessories or extra bulk. Even better, by keeping it streamlined and the fabrics simple it meant that I didn’t have to disrobe at the airport for security. No big heavy belts or earrings setting off alarms; not even steel heeled stilettos to stop me in my tracks.
So yes, dressing simply, comfortably and well for travel can be done. It just takes a little forethought and the banishment of running shoes!

This is such a great example to follor… thank you!

What a lovely outfit!
Isn’t this one of the outfits you have put together for a dressing comfy?
Aurelia: I’m not sure I understand the question..?
That’s a really cute outfit. I don’t know why people always resort to trackpants when a flowy dress made out of a soft fabric is just as, if not MORE comfortable and will always look better.
You wonderful woman! I fly very frequently and cannot believe they way people dress, as if the gate lounge and airplane are an extension of their sitting room. I understand flying no longer being for rich and elite is a good thing, but I do miss the idea of glamming up a little for travel. I agree that comfortable does not mean frumpy, and stylish outfits can be just as suitable to travel in.
Amy: Glamming for travel is a great way to ensure that your plea for an upgrade has more weight too!
That is really an amazing outfit! So galmourous and comfterble! If I were to see you at that airport I’d think; Wow, a woman with style!
I love your traveling outfit, SKM! One thing I have tried over the years is to always blend comfort and stylishness when I travel (be it by car or airplane). Despite sometimes having to get up a bit earlier to get myself ready, I find it’s much more refreshing to be nicely put together when I arrive at my destination!

Casey: You are absolutely correct. Instead of arriving and feeling worn and disheveled, being put together helps you survive the journey in far better shape. (I wish you were in Melbourne as I so need a sewing buddy to help me this week! So behind!)
Not to mention the compression stockings are highly practical for longer travel to prevent DVB!
Kathryn: Yes, I always wear the hardcore medical grade ones when travelling long distance.
Hi there, read the article on you in the local newspaper and just wanted to drop by and congratulate you on representing such a wonderful, classic era. It’s a truly wonderful thing to see these classic styles worn with such grace on such a fantastic looking gal. You have the power to change the eastern suburbs one hoodie and tracksuit at a time. XX
Anthony: Hi there and welcome! Thanks for the vote of confidence – It’s a big job but someones gotta take up the challenge. Make sure to come and say Hi should you ever see me on the street.
Thank you for dressing like a lady when traveling. Why, oh why, have women come to a point where they believe that a CLEAN sweatsuit is all that’s required for going out? You look like a million bucks!
Maravonda: Ha ha “clean sweatsuit”! Like jeans for “good”. LOL
I thought I was fancy for the airport just because I wear my usual red lipstick. You certainly put that to shame!
Wendy: All you need is your megawatt smile and you’re fancy enough!
You look wonderful! And this is how a lady dresses!
I’d love to make a crochet shrug for you if you’re interested. Let me know!
Xenagirl: Oh wow really? That would be fantastic! Can you email me on info@superkawaiimama.com.au ?
Have just read about this site in the paper. My mum dressed like this in the 60′s always thought she looked beautiful. Love the traveling out fit and the hair do section will be trying some of those.
Natasha: I’m hearing some lovely stories like this about people and their mothers. Have fun with the hair!
