A short and sweet outfit post today as I am frantically rushing about trying to get things organised before heading off to Tasmania for this weekend’s Lindy Charm School Workshops (yay!). Today is casual errand day, tying up loose ends and rushing about with a sick toddler in tow.

Here’s what type of activities this outfit was handling – A 4 degree morning, school run, coffee with sick toddler, stationery shop, dress shop, vet. Then sorting, cleaning, packing and doing loads and loads of washing.  A pretty average domestic day really, but when I know I’ll be carrying around a snotty toddler in one arm and bags of shopping in the other I generally skip the heels and opt for something simple.

These are the pants I was crowing about on Twitter the other week.  I knew I wanted another pair of winter weight pants that would be perfect for cleaning days and other tasks that required a lot of floor time.  So with a little dark cotton denim, a bag full of 1940′s buttons and a picture in my head I set to work.  I made these up as I went along, cutting the pieces and pinning, folding and draping till I had what I wanted.  So sadly I can’t tell you where to buy them as I made them myself, the whole box and dice!  They are kind of a 1940′s high waisted style, meets slouchy Oxford pant leg with a deep cuff.

Outfit Details

Blue Sweater – 1940′s hand knit vintage

Blouse – unlabeled second hand store find.

Pants – Made by Me!

Boots (unseen) RMK

Lipstick – Boots No. 7 Moulin Rouge

  1. Darn, I was going to ask where the cardi was from, it’s really cute!!! I love the look of vintage high waisted pants, however they just do NOT suit me at all!!! Review had some really nice ones recently too :(

Retro Jet Girl: I happen to have a fantastic book of vintage knitting patterns with loads of options similar to this one and a wonderful vintage collecting friend who will custom make to order. So if you are really keen, let me know and I can put you two in contact.

  2. [...] This post was mentioned on Twitter by Candice DeVille. Candice DeVille said: Errands and snot – just another glmorous day ;) http://bit.ly/9ZQH0H [...]

That blue looks gorgeous on you, and I love the print on the blouse too. The overall silhouette just suits you so well, and as always i”m in awe of your amazing hair (must try the forehead curl!).

    • Super Kawaii Mama says:

Trashtastika: Next timeI’m in Sydney we can have a hair date. I have some brilliant ideas on fun things to do with your colour ways! :)

      • trashtastika says:

Awesome!! You may have noticed that despite my hair’s pretty colour, its sorta my downfall as I don’t style it nearly enough, and it often looks scraggy. I am always impressed that you make the time to do great things with yours :)

  4. jennine says:

you always look so great in blue, well in any color, but i like you in blue.
    ;)

  5. you always have gorgeous hair, makes me regret cutting mine off! alas, some of us suit long hair and some of us don’t. for now, i’ll have to be happy being the next tank girl incarnate.
super awesome tiny person chair! (it IS a kids’ chair, and not just the angle, right?)

    • Super Kawaii Mama says:

Nicolette: It certainly is! It is a 1960′s child’s chair and I just had it custom upholstered to match my living room set. Soo cute!

  6. Elin says:

    Stunnig as usual!

  7. Esz says:

I hope you have lots of fun in Tassie! I made sure my friend Katie signed up to the Lindy Charm School so I dutifully spread the word :-D

  8. Monika says:

    lovely pictures! as always

  9. Melissa says:

You manage to make dressing for the even the most mundane tasks simply adorable!

I truly admire your sense of style and your ability to pull everything together with such finesse.

I’m going to use your outfit from this post as a basis for pulling together a “go to” look for the mornings when the snooze button is victorious and I’m hurriedly scrambling for an outfit in the wee hours of the morning.

    Thank you!!!

    • Melissa says:

P.S. I hope that your daughter feels better really soon.

Have a blast at the Lindy Charm School workshops!

  10. Paige Halsey says:

This is wicked adorable!! I have been dying for a pair of pants like that. If you can, could you please please PLEASE post a scaled version of your pattern so some of us can learn from your adventures in vintage?

    • Super Kawaii Mama says:

Paige: If I could I would, but my pattern making skills are pretty bad and I can’t scale. Until I get an assistant who can do such things, it all remains in my head.

  11. Sally says:

The pants turned out beautifully! I’m super impressed.

  12. Bree says:

Beautiful outfit, you look lovely. I just bought a pair of 40s style jeans from Viven Of Holloway & the ones you made look just as nice. I hope to sew as well as you do one day!!

  13. Jodie says:

OMG!!! You’re nails are devine !!!!! I just love rounded (not to long) RED nails…flawless….really love this look on you Candice..it looks great and comfy too !! and I hope the Little Miss is getting better x Jodie

    • Super Kawaii Mama says:

Jodie: Thanks! I find these to be the best length to still get about and do everything I have to without much drama. Both girls still have both their eyes so it’s a success so far! :P

  14. Paul Stevens says:

I’m so glad I discovered your site Candice. As a photographer who is keen on retro, pinup portraiture, it’s a relief to have a site I can refer models to for tips. We have a shortage of vintage fashion experts up here in Brisbane. Wish you’d visit us…a lot.

I just love your hairstyle above. It’s just a classic..of course!

    I’ll be back – often!

    • Super Kawaii Mama says:

Paul: Hi Paul. Well as it happens I do visit you and will be up in your neck of the woods for Wintersun. I’ll be there for the whole week, so if you’re around drop me a line :) I do also travel with my work and happy to take hair and makeup bookings for Brisbane too if you need.

  15. MissMarbellw says:

Ooooh, I so want a cardigan like that! I love the little bobbly bits :-) and the colour is gorgeous.

    • Super Kawaii Mama says:

MissMArbellw: The bobbly bits are called “Blackberry stitch” if you are ever looking for a pettern. :)

  16. Love the trousers! And especially together with that beautifully blue knit!

  17. EmilyKate says:

Fantastic trousers, I love love love! Did you draft them right from scratch of adapt an existing pattern? IF SO WHICH PATTERN!!!!
Have fun in Tassie! If you are not running the Charm School the whole time enjoy the beautiful scenery :o )

  18. I LOVE YOUR SITE, VERY KAWAII AS YOU, COLL AND TRENDY FRESH SPIRIT, FÉLICITATIONS, BEST, STÉPHANE

  19. Fran says:

I’ve been looking everywhere for trouser jeans, however they are sadly not in-vogue in Toronto Canada. It’s all about the skinny jean now (sigh). I’ve got some beginner sewing skills and was wondering if I purchased a trouser pattern, would I be able to make it in jeans?

Am I setting myself up for failure? How hard is jean material to work with? Are pants very difficult to make?

    • Super Kawaii Mama says:

Fran: I use a cotton denim with a bit of stretch to it. It isn’t as heavy weight as traditional jeans, so it moves better and works better in the wide leg style. Making jeans from a pants pattern is totally do-able, just think about ways to improve the detail with things like top stiching or pocket placement. Otherwise, if you don’t want to risk it, check out Freddie’s of Pinewood online for some great vintage trouser jeans. :)

  20. You keep doing it SKM! You pull of those pants like no one can! And I love the cardigan, I’m going o make mum knit me the same pattern for a scarf!

  21. You are, without a doubt, skilled in the sewing department.

  22. Gay Lynch says:

Candice, you have inspired me to make my own wide leg denim pants – armed with a wide leg pants pattern and some stretch denim I have created a great pair of pants – they are high waisted and I added a very wide tab to the front from the top of the pants, with the point finishing mid way between the waist and crutch – I added small gold buttons about 2″ apart down both sides and to the point. Voila, I now have a pair of ‘swing’ style pants in a casual fabric. I love them – Thanks for the inspiration!!
