Daily Outfit – A Brand New Hat
I have a new hat. I put it on a took a photo. Then I realised who I reminded myself of…
Lauren Bacall!
Yes, she’s a blonde and I’m a brunette, but there was something in the mood of this photo ( in which I was attempting to capture good detail of the hat for you) that begged for black and white. So I worked a little Photoshop magic lighting and got the feeling I’d seen this before. Okay, so perhaps not exactly the same, but I’m sure you get the same feeling I do with this. Anyway, I digress…
…
I have a new hat. One of the greater thing about living in Melbourne as opposed to let’s say Sydney, (I speak from experience so don’t lampoon me), is that you can wear a hat here and people just think you are ‘arty’ as opposed to ‘completely crackers’! Either way, I’d still wear mine, but living in Melbourne does make me feel like I have license to wear them more often without being compelled to answer a barrage of questions each time I make an outing.
This lovely number is a black felt, 1940′s afternoon hat. I’m always a sucker for the asymetrical, but the fact that is an “afternoon hat” as different to a “morning hat” wins me over! And I totally love it. Some people tell me they can’t wear hats, which is actually complete rubbish; you just need to know what suits your face shapes and how to create hat hair. This is not the kind of hair that is flatened after wearing a hat, but hair that is created around that hat so that it look stunning both on and off. Today, I went with pin curls and a feature side sweep.
And what did this look like all put together for my afternoon meeting?

Pretty darn swanky for a $150 outfit!
(yes I fixed my seams after taking the photo – thank goodness for outfit shots to get a better rear view!)

Gorgeous hat! I bought a cute navy one a while ago that has a bit of netting and a bow. Haven’t found anything to wear it with yet but I do love it. Need to master the art of hat hair! Can’t wait for Lindy Charm School I tell you
Ooooh lovely! I’m really liking hats at the moment. I was given a cloche for my birthday and I do get a few stares when I wear it (although I am in Melbourne and not Sydney
) but I just tell myself that they’re all wishing their head was as toasty warm and stylish as mine!
I adore this hat! It is just gorgeous! You’re so right about the Sydney staring at people in hats thing. I’m coming to think maybe people in Sydney are just less accepting fullstop!!
Hi Candice,
.
I was at Whitehouse today and i got to come in from my class downstairs to hear you speak.
When i saw you it was a like seeing a celebrity
It was very inspirational & previous to the speech today i did look at your blog everyday.
I am now going to start my own blog related to my life, school and being Vegan.
I just wanted to say a huge thank you.
Bianca
p.s i love your hat and the fact you have your own style, which is very had these days for people with the media and advertising telling people what to wear.
Stunning! You are Melbourne’s best answer to Dita von Teese, Miss SKM!
WOW!! You look absolutely stunning. Just when I thought you couldn’t better yourself – you have done it! You need to get your own TV show – really. Wouldn’t it be great if everyone dressed like this? I also want to get into hats, but like Esz I am going to have to wait until Lindy Charm School in July to get some tips
You are magnificient
Vintage Suburbia x
PS I was thinking of you as I did the school run today in tracksuit pants – yes, I am guilty. My excuse – jetlag and general disorganisation after returning from mammoth o/seas trip. Please forgive me!
Hi Candice!
now you need to write a post about how to create hairstyles that still look flattering when one puts one’s hat off. Ok now seriously, that is an unsolved problem for many and the main reason that keeps me from wearing hats more often. Reading something about that issue would be really interesting
The hat is wonderful!!! Also your hair and the whole outfit is composed perfectly, wow!
… but again, you caused yourself a new obligation
Have a nice weekend!

wow, great hat!
You have to love a great hat ! Your entire outfit is just lovely.
That is an incredibly soignée look! You must have wowed them all at your meeting.
I love the back of that blouse.
very stylish – love it!
Hello SKM,
You look totally gorgeous as ever- just like a 1940s noir starlet – the hat and hairstyle is spectacular and I’m really loving the bright red lipstick too.
I am a big fan of Russian Red lippie too but I’m wondering if you could recommend a good lip pencil to wear underneath. I’ve tried a couple of cheap red lipliners but none of them really match the russian red colour exactly. Would be most grateful for any tips.
Gorgeous hat – and outfit all round!
This is a truly gorgeous look, but you know who instantly came to mind for me even more so than Miss Bacall? Joan Crawford in Mildred Pierce. The resemblance in the first shot, especially, is stunning. I love it!
I love that red top! <3
love this
C’est vraiment une très jolie tenue, que tu as très bien mis en valeur avec ce chapeau.
Lilou
wow.. great outfit huh.
Lean: Thanks.
