I know Mother’s Day is still a little way off, but I was doing some rummaging around today and wanted to share this with you. When I came across this photo I almost cried. Miss Two now looks almost exactly the way I do in this photo and that makes me fell a thousand things. Not least is that I am so grateful to have had a well dressed mother who lead by example and taught me about style – not fashion. Who let me explore dress up boxes and wear what I wanted (mostly, although there were a few dodgy teen years there). Who taught me to see the value in a well cut suit, a second hand knit and to create with a needle what my mind would dream.
This photo is the beginning. It is the foundation of a lifetime of joy through style, of understanding balance, colour and harmony. It is one of the best gifts I was ever given.

That pink and blue! Your mother looks gorgeous.
your mother is lovely!
nnaawwww! You’re so cute and your Mum is so stylish. A lovely photo!
Aww, that was a lovely post!! I can see your mum liked vintage too
My mum worked in the fashion section of Coles, and would buy me dresses and pantsuits (in the 70′s) and taught me you can dress cheaply but stylishly.
How lovely. What a beautiful pair.
I wish I learnt about style when I was growing up, but I’m learning more from you everyday.
This made me a tad teary, gorgeous picture.
I am a late bloomer to style, have let it slide even more since becoming a mummy.
My grandmother would love your site (no offence intended) she always has and still remains very stylish and has made her own clothes (and a family of 6 childrens clothes plus outfits/toys/blankets for numerous grandchildren and now great-grandchildren) she is in her 80′s and still knits and sews daily. I hope to become more like her and yourself!
I truly adore this blog, thank you!
Too cute
You are both so beautiful. I love her dress… I want it
xoxo
Is that really Heather? She looks amazing! And you look rather cute yourself! It’s nice that I’ve found you at last. We spoke briefly just before Melbourne Cup last year. Will email you further.
What a sweet picture of Super Kawaii Mama and Super Kawaii Nana!
Your mother looks like she should be in pictures (golden age of cinema). She quite lovely!
I grew up quite poor but my Mum always managed to make my brother and I look very good in second hand clothes. This post made me think of my own Mum and how instrumental she was in forming my love of fashion. Thank you for posting this. Your blog rocks by the way!
how lovely! I really do adore old photographs of people, like memories stored safe should you ever forget to remember. I’ll bet you we treasure it almost as much as you do now
Your mother looks so glamorous, what a lovely picture
I can see where you get your awesome sense of style from.
Was this photo of a special occasion, or did you and your mum dress this fabulously every day?
So cute! Let’s see some awkward teen years.
Oh, my! Your mama is one stylish lady. What a fabulous outfit she’s wearing! You look pretty cute, too.
I’m a late bloomer to fashion, too. It took me a long time to find my era and be comfortable with it. But, now that I have, I’m embracing it and am getting more comfortable as myself every day!
I’m really happy I found your blog – it’s a feast for the senses!
Sarah: Thank you so much. I’m really enjoying your blog too and especially the June project!! As soon as I have a moment I’m hoping to take up that challenge.
Sarah: Thank you so much, I’m so pleased you’re enjoying it as much as I’m enjoying yours.
Gosh what a lovely photo! I’m quite the opposite – never had a great role model but was always interested in personal grooming and striking style. My dad says I get it from my Great Aunt Pearl who always looked impeccable. I still see myself as having a very long way to go though, so much to learn!
I hope your daughters reap the benefits of having such a stylish mum!
Love your blog SKM
Suzette: I love that you had a Great Aunt Pearl.
We all need a Shirley, Pearl or Florence in our lives; I know that it was those sort of women I’ll remember forever.
Oh yes, Pearl was fabulous! At age 80 she was still pottering around London in her cream vintage Mini with her hair perfectly set. I always admired her style and through letters and an occasional visit to the UK, we had a lovely relationship
I’m sure you will be that kind of old lady… beautiful until the end.
Her sister, my nana was Audrey and if I ever have a girl her name will be Audrey Pearl. I’ve been blessed with two sons so far and am not sure if I have the energy for any more!
Keep up the awesome work… I’m afraid I’m obsessed with that Review dress from a few seasons ago as we have very similar figures. I’m on the hunt!
What a beautiful photo…. Like mother, like daughter.
My daughter Alice is four and like myself before her, loves her mummy’s red lipstick and nails.
Navigating the teen years will be interesting!
