Last Saturday was my Mum’s birthday. Being a big decophile, she hosted an evening of old style swank and spangles giving us all another reason to get glammed up. I’m often asked just what should one wear to a 1920′s themed evening, with far too many people (in my opinion) taking the easy way out and going for a costume hire shop, flapper girl look. The 1920′s was one of the most diverse and exciting times in fashion history as the old world of corsets and Gibson Girls faded into the modern world. The best thing about that for party goers in 2010, is that it leaves loads of room for interpretation and finding something that really works for you. For me, that look was more Silent Movie Star than Piano Hall Floozy.
My whole family tends to the more dramatic end of the scale when it comes to fashion; even my dad gets dragged into the act on occassion. So before the party started we tried to keep a straight face as we messed around posing it up in front of the fire place.
I tweeted a quick picture on the way in and it seems that this look was a real hit. It is rather a departure from my usual but I love the way it turned out. The hair was one of those things that you plan out in your mind with no idea if it will ‘actually’ work, so I was pleased as punch that it turned out like this. It was a combination of finger waves, pin curls and a french roll to keep the length up at the back. If I can recreate it well, I’ll make a tutorial on it for you.
I wanted the makeup to be dark and dramatic, very Clara Bow meets Anna May Wong. Something that said “silent movie – watch my eyes”, and to make that happen I went with the biggest, lushest lashes I could find. The “Hepburn” lash from Gorgeous cosmetics. It all looks a bit serious, but I spent far more time laughing and eating chocolate chilli cupcakes than being all dark and mysterious that evening.

You looked so beautiful! You need to do a tutorial for the hair!
You look stunning! I love the way these photographs have been taken too – very glamorous.
Natalia; Thank you. There wasn’t anything fancy in the taking of the photos and no real post production either. Just taken by lamp light with no flash and I added the black framing at the end. That’s all, but it really does have great ambience.
I was watching this show blush, and I think you’d really love it, you are really working the lashes…. I love participating in photo shoots, although, I have not perfected LASHES.. this even looks a bit 1920′s too…
Girl Japan: The lashes took my quite a while to master but once I had that “lightbulb moment” I haven’t looked back. I’ve added them to the tutorial list
Stunning, lady! I just remarked to Kruppy that you inspire me to get creative with makeup.
Love the makeup and the hair!
Now THAT is my kind of costume party!
Wow SKM, I’m just amazed at how wonderfully fluid you are from one look to the next!
I suspect the Melbourne Dr Sketchy’s team would just love you

Belinda: Ahh I love Dr.Sketchy’s! Perhaps I shall make an appearance one day
How I wish I could pull off the dark and mysterious look! Well done with the lashes in particular.

The last photo..beautiful!…it’s just so “of that time”…I can ‘hear’ the music, the speakeasy chatter, smell the cigars, …and I’m also seeing ‘Smooth Criminal’!!
That’s so gorgeous! One of my favourite fashion periods and you pull it off so well!

Piano hall floozy? Love the term. Where did you get the fan? And what did Mr. SKM wear?
Meream: The fan is from a chinese $2 shop! Mr SKM was very dapper in a new 1930′s style suit from Anton’s complete with cravat and suspenders
Hello from Singapore!
Very gorgeous! Love the hair
Cette coiffure est top.

Hi Candice, love this page, read it ages ago and just came back looking for it…I’m not sure if it’s possible, but perhaps tag it as 20s or 1920s, as I had trouble finding it. I found it by searching for “party” then scrolling through “older entries”. Shared the link with a friend going to s 20s party looking for advice…everyone said flapper LOL…hopefully I’ve steered her into a nicer direction. Lorri xx
