tea party dress 2 Daily Outfit The Tea Party Dress

Remember that fancy tea party the other week?  Well here are the outfit photos of what I wore.

It is super, super girly and was particularly appropriate for that kind of event; but it was also almost all vintage! Well at least half.

tea party dress1 Daily Outfit The Tea Party Dress

The dress itself I picked up at the last Way We Wear vintage fair here in Melbourne.  I was told at the time that it is an early 1960′s square dancing dress and it was one of a set of three all in different colours.  The seller even had the matching men’s waist coats and ties that would have been worn to dance with their beau. Awww.

It is made of some sort of metallic threaded, synthetic eyelet lace type material with no give at all so I don’t know what it would have been like for dancing!  Underneath is a baby blue tulle petticoat that has its origins in the early 1980′s and is a bit of a rough homemade job. Not to worry though, cause it did the trick and I love the colour – it was also free!

The stockings I found at Myer on sale and are from the Pins collection by Leona Edmiston There are a little too cheer for my liking but the spot pattern was irresistible.

Shoes – well what can I say? These are incredibly awesome “Japan” shoes from Wittner.  They are incredibly comfortable and you can even run in them with no difficulty should the occassion call for it.

*Please note – I am not attempting to do a pidgeon-toed, ingenue blogger stance here; I was just sliding down the hill!!*

Given that the scarf is all scrunched up tied to my bag, I thought I’d spread her out for a proper appreciation shot.

When I saw this hanging on the rack at Circa Vintage, I leapt for it like a rabid scarf hound! I’ve never seen anything like the print before and new it would be the perfect foil to a collection of many plain coloured scarves.  The bag was a bit of a sneaky sale rack find ($10!) at Equip, that cheap little accessory shop, and while I don’t tend towards small bags there are times that they are really the only chic option. That and it was ROSE print!

The right accessories really make or break this dress as I found out a few times when I just couldn’t make it work. Here’s a round up of the rest-

Headband – pinched from Miss Two

Earrings – pearl bows from Equip

Necklace – ‘Love’ on faux pearls from Equip also

Bow Bangle – Friends of Couture

.. and I think that’s everything!

*P.S: You’ll notice a few changes happening around here.  Please bare with me as I get everything finished and the kinks sorted out. *

  5. Dear SKM,
I love your new look website, very cute indeed! That Equip bag was such a good find! Maria, Vintage Suburbia x

  6. Hexotica says:

I love seeing women wear such beautifully quirky outfits. Keep them coming! And I’m apologizing in advance if I end up wearing those exact same shoes! LOVE them!

    • Super Kawaii Mama says:

Hexotica: Hey no apologies necessary. I’ve been recomending these left right and centre given that I have TWO pairs myself!

  7. Katie says:

The tights! I looked everywhere on the high street for them, where I lived in the UK last year. Plenty of white leggings but not white tights.
Now, in NZ, not a chance! The whole look is too cute…

  8. Cara says:

Ahhhh that dress is amazing! Never would have thought to wear a blue tulle skirt underneath but I LOVE the look!

  9. Bucca says:

Totally adoreable outfit! Are those shoes flat? I need to buy some flats to wear while I am in this neckbrace!

  10. I love that dress, so perfect for a high tea! I love what you’ve done with the site, and know what you mean, I recently revamped my site and there were almost tears with a few mishaps! Hope it goes a bit smoother for you, though:)

  11. Dear SKM
Sorry, just a quick question, rather than a comment. I have been looking everywhere online for the Friends of Couture sartori pants you featured last week (or was it the week before?). They don’t seem to be listed on their online store. I would kind of prefer to buy them online as I live in SE suburbs and don’t want to schlepp to the CBD or Prahan for them. How did you buy your pair? Many thanks, Maria

    • Super Kawaii Mama says:

Maria: I’ll ask them to update the website with them because they are too good to miss out on. I got mine in at the Sydney road store in Brunswick. Also, they are a generous sizing so I fit an 8, but also a 10 if I want to be able to tuck in chunky winter fabrics and have even more room (for dancing and such) They are a nice heavy weight and have the perfect amount of stretch in the fabric. I don’t think you’d personally need anything bigger than the 8 from memory of your slender waist.

  12. Abigael says:

Your outfit is just divine! This last year I’ve absolutely fallen in love with yellow and watermelon and I love the way you combine the colours of your dress and petticoat! I had to laugh when you said your dress was a square dancing dress because my parents both square dance (my dad teaches and my mum makes the outfits) and I used to when I was younger. MY mum has photos of all her pretty dresses from the 60′s and 70′s! I’ve also been coveting a pair of those shoes since I saw them in shops last year, and almost bought a pair whilst visiting Sydney over New Years. Sadly as a student, I couldn’t even afford the $60 sale price :( But I’m hopeful I might be able to pick up a pair (perhaps on ebay).

I really love your new website too! It was such a pleasant surprise!

  13. Sally says:

How much do I love the tulle petticoat peeking out? A LOT.

  14. Lorie Bronson says:

I ADORE this outfit. It is everything I love about being a girl. 5 *’s

  15. Leanne says:

*I* was just gonna say how I loved the aqua tulle peeping out at the bottom of the dress, but someone beat me to it! I love a bit of aqua, me :)

  16. Deb says:

That is such an amazing outfit! The colours you have put together are amazing. As a mother of small daughters, I had to chuckle at your borrowed hair accessory, it’s normally the other way round in my house, LOL.

  17. Lauren says:

Love love love the pink dress! Such a girly girl outfit. Love it!

  18. mello says:

I LOVE LOVE LOVE your pink shoes! :D

  19. BowsNHearts says:

Lovely styling and lovely dress! If I see a dress like that in real life and if it fits me as well as it does on you…I will cry in happiness!!

  20. Elise says:

Those shoes are the greatest… following this post and spying them on sale I purchased them (bearing in mind your comment of “they are so comfy you could run in them”)

And they are comfy… I was wearing them at the races in Melbourne when we had those appalling storms and my feet were safe and dry and super stylish

  21. stella says:

wow, pink dress gorgeous! and she looks sooooo cute.

  22. Rosaleen says:

Totally adoreable outfit! Party dress gorgeous! and she looks so cool.
