You’ll remember me slaving away over a new creation here right? Well, here is the final product!
It was the perfect outfit for a summer’s evening dinner with friends.
As I was making the dress I was imagining all the combinations and different ways of wearing it, but one of the problems that always happens here in Melbourne with our unpredictable weather is deciding on short or long sleeves. Thank goodness for Friends of Couture ;and their brilliant range of cardigans that came to my rescue. This little darling is called “Daughters of Pleasure” and has the most delightful cotton lace detailing as well as cut amber coloured buttons. They come in a few different colours including greens and pinks, and if you’re quick you can still get your hands on them while they are on sale – reduced to $39.99!
Outfit Details

I love this dress pattern so much, and I’m feeling so inspired at the moment that I’ve bought a whole new selection of fabrics to make some different varieties!
Let’s see how it translates into a whole range of looks!

Beautiful! I love the whole outfit!!
Is your hair blue-black here? It looks fantastic on you!
Is the dress pattern by McCall? I think i might have the same pattern! I’ve made about 4 dresses so far each with a light variation, its the best! You look so well put together as always, luv the veronica lake hair!
It looks wonderful! I love cotton sateen, it is so luxurious. And that print is just stunning.
OHhhhhhhhh I love it! Suits you so well!

What an adorable cardigan! Cardi’s are my weakness because they are just so cute and versatile.
I love your blog and I love seeing what outfits you come up with each day. I’m inspired by the 50s look (which was made for real sized women unlike the stuff out there today) and I love that you bring a bit of old time glamour into your everday outfits.
I love the dress! It looks absolutely flawless, you are so talented!
That dress is so pretty – the neckline is amazingly flattering, and the cardigan matches so well. FOC make such cute cardigans, they’re always on my wishlist but I have difficulty choosing just one design!
This dress is stunning! I know what you mean about Melbourne weather, but at least everything in my wardrobe gets a regular workout.
Amazing! The dress is stellar, but that cardigan is truly a work of art.
I think this is one of the loveliest outfits I’ve seen you in yet! The purple and teal/green are wonderful colors on. This is perfect.
(And that cardigan is AMAZING!)
The fabric is completely beautiful (and so of course is the finished outfit), can you tell us where you found it?
Kate: I believe it is a fabric that Portmans used this year. I got it from an end of roll place on Sydney road in Brunswick.
I love how this turned out! I have my January challenge of a dress to get to. I have my vintage pattern and fabric all ready and then my machine quit. Luckily a friend has stepped in with a lend so I can get my dress finished and then tackle the repair job myself. I love the color combination as well. You are in the midst of summer and we in winter here in New England.
Gorgeous outfit! You are very talented.
I die over your hair in every photo!
You look so beautiful! I love the color and your hair is absurdly glamorous.
I JUST love it, adore it.. it is fabulous!!!!!!! I have not heard from you in a while? How are you darling?
April Marie: Hey! I’m good, but super busy with trying to juggle work and school holidays. Hopefully back to normal in a week.
Your dress is gorgeous! I wish I had your talent. And that cardigan is so pretty and matches the dress perfectly.
Oooh thanks for the heads up on the cardi. I think I need one.
And GORGEOUS dress
First, this whole outfit looks fantastic. The colours flatter you, and the cardigan matches perfectly to the dress
Second: Could you please please describe how you did your hair? It looks so great!!!
That’s so beautiful! I really must learn to sew….
First, this looks soo good
the colour flatters you, and dress and cardigan match perfectly! Second: Could you please please describe how you did your hair? This is so beautiful!
Christiane: Sure. I’ll make a special tutorial on it for next week.
Ooops I commented two times… sorry, I thought it didnt work the first time :/
I love this dress on you. I had trouble with my machine over the weekend so my sewing has been put off until today, but a friend has leant me her machine. There is so much satisifaction in making your own clothes and you even have children to take care of, so good for you! I also really adore the ring.
What is the dress pattern called? I know it’s vintage, but maybe I could try to track one down on ebay. I love the dress!!!
You look like a million bucks, love this deep shade of purple on you and that the cut of the dress is stunning.
Well done, just lovely!

What gorgeous fabric. The purple and teal really suit your colouring.
Floraposte and Darla: They are a few of my favorite colours… but then most are!
FABULOUS!!!
You look so pretty; and what an amazing job you did on your new dress!
Well done, SKM!
What a wonderful website! Love the dresses you wear. So creative! Keep up the good work!:)
Wenmummy: Thank you – I try.
Thanks you
Melissa:
Wow, that dress was well worth the slaving! Looks great.
the dress looks wonderful!
did you pick up dress-making skills by yourself?
i’m thinking of learning it as well, but not sure if i should do it myself or join a class!
any advice?
Denise: I owe much of my ability to my mother who perservered with me through hours and hours of mistakes. I did take a short dress making course at Tafe, but all of my other formal fashion training has been more in the business and media area rather than paterrn making and the like. I’ve learnt somuch about garment construction, fabrics etc.. through being a vintage fashion collector as well as the daughter of a mother who sewed all the time when I was growing up. Much of what you see here is the result of many years failures and blind stupidity / bravery, that eventually turned to success! lol.
