Some Daily Outfits give me more challenges than most – especially when children and roller skating are involved! I was invited to take Miss Five on her first skating expedition this week along with a group of mothers and children from her school. She was SUPER excited about going, wondering if she was supposed to win a gold medal and jump off big stuff! Me, well I used to be a big skater, going a few times a week and carving up the floor…. but that was a very long time ago. I still had the old skates out away in the cupboard, but the have only been out on the rink about once or twice in the last eleven years. This presented a whole new wardrobe challenge – just what does one wear when rollerskating with a bunch of five year old children??
I had to think long and hard on this one as my first instincts were to go with some of the outfits I last wore and break out the whole Olivia Newton John in Xanadu tpe of look. But just in case that may cause the other mothers to shield their children from this crazy woman I decided to go with something a little less theatrical. There was no way I was going to wear my workout gear for this ,as for me, workout gear belongs only in the gym so I had to think of the next best thing.
After a bit of a rummage around in the depths of the wardrobe I came up with an outfit that I haven’t worn in a while – it was one of my last pregnancy staples! I have this great skull print jersey dress that has an open, cross over back that I used to wear backwards while I was pregnant with Miss 2. I’d throw this over yoga pants for casual days and it did the trick. So it was the perfect thing to be both cute and comfortable whilst skating too.

So is rollerskating back? The last time I was at a rink I was rollerblading while all the poor rollerskates languished on the shelves. I do think rollerskating is altogether more civilised.

That always happens. I have been the one on ice skates, dressed up like a pirate (girly, but piraty) and plunging through the mud in boots, while the other parents looked at all the chaos, dressed like a real parent, from a save distance.
Oh well, let’s hope the children will remember it as ‘cool’, instead of ‘weird’. 
Hahaha, at least you had fun skating then! Where’s the fun in going to a skating rink if you don’t intend to skate? Plus, you look great.

I love it, especially the hair and makeup. Love the bow! Now you mention it, I don’t think I’ve skated since I was 19! I used to live at a hotel with my dad during the week (he worked in Sydney, I studied there, but we both lived in Kiama usually), and I’d go skate up on the roof, with a beautiful view of Sydney Harbour! Good times…

This entry made me wonder–do your girls have any perception that you dress quite differently to their cohorts’ mamas and if they do, have they (or at least Miss 5) expressed any thoughts on this?

I imagine you were the best dressed over 3 feet tall on the rink ! I cannot roller skate to save my life, now ice skating, thats a whole other thing.

So cute! I must admit, I see those dresses on people all the time, but you’re quite honest the first I’ve seen that rocked it without looking… meh
I used to love skating, I was an ice and wheels gal (although not at the same time – I wasn’t THAT fearless!) and now my skates are poorly neglected as I feel oddly self-conscious when I put them on. Strange that something that gave me such joy and taught me to play with risks would do that now. I think I should remember the child I once was, and to hell with what people think!
(Although after the ice has melted here… I’m still not that fearless, obviously!)
I’ve tried rollerskating only once and it was with the modern rollerskates. Let’s just say it wasn’t my thing =) I adore that hair bow of yours!
I’ve always been inspired by skating. It’s just so elegant. I wish I could find vintage roller skates but they are very hard to come by here in england.

I think it’s so great you went, despite the other mums sitting it out. i go swimming with the kids when the other is doing their lessons and they just love it.
