And here’s me thinking you done “casual” quite well! Your Paris & Japan outfit was this side of casual glam, in my eyes… but then, I’m still trying to find my stride too, in the casual stakes!
I’ve not been a huge fan of the quality of clothes I find either, especially clothes in my (very limited) price bracket! I see what the designers had in mind, but cheap labour and even cheaper fabric means that even the clothes I end up buying just so I had *something* to cover myself end up in the bin within the week, not even useable for recycling or redesigning!
And people wonder why I love vintage clothes?
I couldn’t agree more! I am going to try and sew this year as well. Unfortunately, it has been MANY years since I have done any sewing, so I am a little nervous, but I am determined.
Best of luck, and pass on any awesome patterns you might find.
I have to say, I don’t think this is just an Australian thing, as mass market fashion seems to be the same way here in Canada. There seems to be a get it produced, get it out cheaply, but sell for lots of money type of mentality. Vintage all the way!
BTW, I love how your voice rose a bit when you were talking about a Hello Kitty trip to Japan. You sound like me when I talk about Walt Disney World!
Cheers!
~Paige
Welcome back to 2010! I totally agree with the junk that’s out there, so I sew my own vintage and modern patterns – the vintage ones get most of the compliments though!
Love your Blog!
Happy New Year! I’m another one who gets frustrated at the poor quality of clothes in the shops. I see myself Etsy-ing and making more of my own stuff these days.
Good luck with finding your casual side. I’m a jeans lover, so absolutely no help to you, lol!
Oops! Was also wanting to say, thank you so much for putting me onto Reebonz! I shop online a lot, and this is shop is the BEST I’ve ever shopped with! I was very impressed!
Happy New Year SKM! Couldn’t agree with you more re: cheap clothes in the stores. I simply don’t shop in the major stores anymore – the clothes are all hideous. Very bad for the environment too – all those cheap dyes etc. Jeans are particular bad on this score (because of all the bleaches etc they use – straight into the Chinese river system). Sorry, I have gotten all depressing on you! Anyway, happy new year and looking forward to reading you blog again in 2010. M x
Hi there!
I couldn’t agree with you more. I believe that our future lies in our past. We have to learn to respect the legacy of our grandmothers and mothers, in their days a lot of hours were put in a single item of clothing, that would then be worn for years to come.
I too am disguisted by this instant pop culture mass produced clothes so my solution is to sew my own clothes and buy from small independent designers.
Here’s a link to Colette patterns:

with a lovely selection of vintage inspired patterns
happy sewing!
Happy New Year SKM!! I too am so sick of the clothes in stores at the moment. What really gets under my skin the the ‘maternity’ dresses that are out now!!! I mean i enjoyed being pregnant but i dont want to look pregnant forever!!!
Oh, and your ‘vintage injury’ story had me in stitches
Happy New Year to you too!
Wow, what can I say: I couldn’t agree with you any more than what you just said about Australasian fashion, particularly at the moment.
I went to look around in stores around Auckland, New Zealand the other day and found NOTHING that I wanted. Like you said, they are all cheap, grossly designed and crap. I don’t like the terrible quality of material, or the gross textile patterns out at the moment.
I’ve decided to save all my money for when I get to Los Angeles, so I can find some nice clothes. Good posts as always, Candice.
p.s – Just in LA, there’s MELROSE, which is just MEGA amazing for vintage shopping. Super cheap, but super super beautiful. I’m thinking of doing some video-logs about it, and taking pictures. Thought you’d love to see.
Happy 2010, SKM!!! I always love watching your videos.
I have been moving towards softer pinks and purples lately too with my makeup (love the look your sporting in this video!); although I still love my neutral eye and red lips too. lol.
I know what you mean about getting a handle on casual. I tend to really dress up on most days–heels and all. But sometimes it isn’t so easy as that! One of my goals in ‘10 is to find/make more “easy wear” pieces that are still solidly within my retro-influenced aesthetic. Things like knit tops with vintage details, and practical cotton skirts and slacks that look okay with flat shoes. Things I can just throw in the washing machine!
Can’t wait to see where 2010 takes you!

URGH yes, Australian mass market fashion is beyond dire. It’s all outrageously expensive for what it is (I can’t believe Sportsgirl actually charges over $100 for something they’ve clearly bought from their Taiwanese wholesaler for 40 cents). Can’t deal. And if I see ONE MORE GIRL wearing those heinous faux jeans or one of those short, tight 80s singlet dresses that look awful on even perfect bodies, I’m going to scream.
Love your blog! I agree, casual is very difficult. I’m always trying to think ANYTHING I can make that is easy and comfortable to wear to the shops to buy milk etc but I still can’t really think of anything!
Happy 2010 to you too ! I look forward to your casual look as I also am always ‘dressed’, heels etc. I don’t bother even looking in the stores. I buy vintage or sew my own from vintage patterns. Here’s to a productive year.
Many happy returns! Can’t wait to see how you do casual and the new makeup looks.
Oooooh, I’m so excited to hear you’re getting ready to start making more of your wardrobe yourself! I know what you create is going to be AMAZING. We’re in for a treat
)
Yay! I finally get to watch one of your vlogs!
You come across SO well on film, you’re just like you are in real life – very natural and at ease, plus you look GREAT!
is there anywhere online I can go to watch it?
Wish I’d seen you when you were on TV
Couldn’t agree with you more about the sales…urgh, I avoid them like the plague, it’s all scrappy seconds! I’d rather have less and buy it at full price, in an enjoyable setting, where I’m not surrounded by pushy people and damaged merchandise
Also feeling you on the pink! We are in fashion sync
After banning pink from my wardrobe as I decided it was tacky, over the last few months I started buying pink polishes, lip glosses and now it’s moved to clothing!
Funny how your mood can dictate your clothing choices…
This will make you smile, some lovely fans of our blogs were speculating what our lads do for a living. Mr SKM is apparantly a rich tradie!!!! and Mr PB is a TV producer.
I smiled and neither confirmed nor denied
Some things have to remain private, yes?!

PB: Oh that IS funny! You can see the TV segment here on my You Tube: http://www.youtube.com/user/superkawaiimama?gl=AU&hl=en-GB#p/a/u/1/T3lmhdunwP8
As far as banning colours go, there are only a few that I TOTALLY ban and they tend to be in the orange based family – like golden yellow, golden brown etc.. nothing makes me look sicker! After many years of an all black teen goth wardrobe, I’ve learnt to expected the unexpected and have even been going back to prints which I never thought I’d do!
Thanks for the link
I’m so happy I got to see it.
You looked smokin’ hot, just gorgeous! And Nicoles store looks fab too.
I’ve said it before *blushes* but I MUST go have a look sometime…
