Last night I hit the town for the Nuffnang Australia Blue Christmas Party. You all know I love an opportunity to dress up, so having the chance to go monochrome was right up my alley. And yes, I didn’t have to buy a thing for this outfit, it was all in the wardrobe already! (Please forgive the somewhat sub par cropping of the outfit shots. I had to take these at 1am on the return from the party!)
The dress I found a few years back and is a 1980′s cocktail dress from Syndicate, authentically polyester and all! The cocktail hat came from my grandmother and was one she wore to a family wedding back in the 1980′s too. The hoochie shoes I found online last year at Urban Originals and yes I love their blue, platformed, spike heeled-ness. I can actually stand all night in these!
The party was cracking fun in at Terra Rossa in Melbourne. Great venue, great food and a fantastic crowd of fellow bloggers. It is always fun to spend time with people who understand this blogging obsession we have, and even more so when we all get to dress up! We had food bloggers, travel bloggers, fashion bloggers, parenting bloggers, photo bloggers and even a lovely lolita blogger! We must have looked as though we were having a blast as a few of the other venue patrons came to question me about how they could join the party too!
It was a perfect evening, the only thing that could have topped it was if Elvis had shown up for a Blue Christmas!
The one small irony of the evening was that I was so busy chatting, photographing and Tweeting the night away, that I didn’t even get to have my favorite thematic tipple – Bombay Sapphire Gin!

Love the dress, perfect shade of blue for you! So sad I couldn’t make it last night
flat out from work.

What a beautiful outfit! I was so busy chatting with you last night that I didn’t even mention how much I liked your style. Looking forward to seeing you at the next Nuffnang gathering.

Jetsetting Joyce: Lovely to meet you too and thank you. We will indeed catch up again in the new year.

Going to take a wild guess here and say.. is blue or teal your fav color? How have you been Mrs.? Missed you!!!!
Wow, amazing outfit!
I especially love the nails, I hope you decide to do a tutorial at some point.
It was great to meet you last night! And your outfit did look fabulous.
I’ve spent all afternoon browsing your blog – really enjoying it, especially the Glamour Safari!
Speak soon,
Poppy xox
I Love your dress, it’s such a beautiful blue! Noticed your nails as well they look very nice and bling. Wished I could join you guys at the party too!
Beautiful, as always!….BTW, I was just wondering…are you an Elvis fan. You have mentioned him a couple of times lately, and I was just curious. My parents are MAJOR fans. I think I have spent more time in Elvis’ house than he did, LOL. I agree with the previous poster, I would love to see a tutorial for those nails. Awesome!
Lorie: I don’t mind his music, but I quite like his movies. All singing, all dancing fun!
Jin: We would love to have had you there!
Poppy: The Glamour Safari was so fun to make. Lovely to meet you too.
Rosie: I have decided to do a tutorial, now I just need to find the time! It won’t be before Christmas but it is in the works.
Lovely to meet you, I’m so glad to have finally been able to chat to you in person! Definitely will stay in touch! <3
Think you will be front runner for the best dressed in blue – you looked amazing!
PlanningQueen: Thanks so much! Couldn’t very well win a contest at a party I hosted though. Darn
Hi, Candice.
When reading the word Polyesther in your text, I knew I would ask you to help me find an answer to a question that bothers me since 2005.
Thanks and the blue suits your colours!
I am married to an Australian and when we were in Australia and I tried to shop I was a bit astonished to see that a lot of clothes are made of artificial fibres – almost everything I saw at CUE for example. When my MIL and SIL came to visit and they went shopping they came back with full bags of skirts and shirts and tops and pants – all made of cotton, silk and linen because they claimed that it were rather difficult to get these in Australia … Why is that so or did this change by now? Funny thing this.
Andrea: Well it depends on two things – where you shop and what you price points are, which I imagine is the same in most places. When I shop I ALWAYS look a the fabric composition tags because it helps me figure out durability, length of wear, care etc..I find it very easy to buy natural fibers here, but then I’m pretty well versed in where and how to shop. One of the mistakes I’ve seen a lot of people make is not knowing the names of many of the other natural fibres around and assuming that cotton, silk and linen are pretty much it. There are a number of alternatives around that are still natural fibres but carry proprietorial names – like Tencel, Lycel and Viscose. If you aren’t familiar with these fibres, the name alone could make you think that they are not natural, especially if they come with a trademark symbol.
…Anyway.. ( I can ramble)… You can buy cotton shirts at Kmart here as well as silk tops in Target, so they certainly aren’t hard to come by, in fact Australia is actually a big cotton producer.
You mentioned Cue (where I also shop) and many of my pieces from there are natural / man made blends. I would say that this is because of the design of the garments that need to accommodate a very tailored look, but need to have some stretch to be forgiving and available to a wider market. Also it makes a difference in the amount of time spent caring for a garment. If it is pure cotton or linen you will need to spend much more time ironing than if it is a cotton poly blend – and people in general are a lazy bunch.
Currently the pieces I have from Cue include woolen skirts, cotton velvet jackets and a shirt that is 90% cotton and 10% spandex ( a very fitted number).
I don’t know if that gives you the answer you are looking for but it seems I could write a whole post on the topic!
xx SKM
Thanks for a great question.
Dear Candice
Although it was not completely the answer I expected I do think you should write a post about it as I am sure that a lot of people would love to hear more about fibres. And really I don’t know and did not ask myself how much my IL’s know about materials … my hubby’s family has no dress sense at all, they all do comfy, comfy, comfy in strange prints most of the time
Might be a Brisbane problem, who knows? I never ever saw that much sports gear on streets and in restaurants …
To cue: well, this is now nearly five years ago and I bought seven garments there. Freezing cold and christmasy white as it is today I left my bed for ten minutes to look at them and one of the trousers is a poly-cotton mix, the shirt is a poly-viscose and the rest is more or less artificial with only small parts gained by nature refining processes. But that might have been the exception.
But what I really want to say: go for such a post, you would do a great job and if you would like to do me a favour (my loveliest smile just for you): don’t forget knitwear and the fact that Cashmere is best and most durable when mixed
Love your blog.
You look positively radiant, lady!
Looking brilliant in blue I must say ! I’m interested in seeing how you did your nails too and how long it took. I need to squeeze some me time into my days………………..perhaps in the new year.
Also I tried sending you a message but it kept telling me I was putting in the wrong letter code thing but I know it was right ?
Jaede: Thanks for letting me know. That annoying form keeps on doing that and I can’t fix it! You can email at skm@superkawaiimama.com.au The nails don’t take more than about an hour and a half total, but I do them over two days.
blue is SO your color! i love the netting!
Wow…I really love your makeup and the nail polish!
Wow! I cannot think of anything else to say! You look supremely stunning!! I imagine you stole the show! The blue eyeliner, the shimmering frock! You look absolutely fabulous!!
I am supremely jealous!
