July 20097 Jazzing up the Everyday

When I was in Tokyo, I spent a few hours one afternoon wandering around a department stores with the best visual merchandising I have ever seen. One of the little tricks I loved was created by the girls on the Anna Sui counter, and I have been dying to use it ever since.

So when I came across this vintage AVON powder jar at the vintage fair, I knew exactly what I would use it for – and here is the result. Just using those embossed makeup pads, I layered them into the jar one at a time to create a camellia effect, and I think the results are just darling. A nice way to jazz up something so very simple, and it looks lovely on the vanity.

Do you have any great tips for V.M-ing your space?

Oh I thought that was one of those scented carved wooden flowers! that is so cute :)

  2. That looks so lovely! You are right, it looks like a camella. The only thing I can think of that I do to repurpose the mundane and make it beautiful is to save jars that have an interesting shape and then steam off the labels. I then group them on my kitchen windowsill and put freshly cut flowers in them. It gives me something pretty to look at while I do the dishes.

For some reason I concentrate all my home VM in the kitchen. I put my oils and vinegars etc in a beautiful wicker basket, line teacups up in rows, hang garlic and rosemary from metal hooks, and spend waaayyy to long arranging fruit in bowls when I get home from doing the groceries.
How embarrassing.. I blame it on four years of retail employment!

  4. Allison says:

Beautiful, I thought that was a real flower upon first glance!
I’ve VM’d my perfumes which now sit shiny and vibrantly on a silver serving tray on my dresser. It really makes me want to use them, which is great as I have quite a few to get through!

  5. Libertad says:

OMG, what a lovely idea! Japanese are always so creative and cute for this things… I’ll do the same at home!
Btw, Anna Sui’s cosmetics are excellent, I love them!

    • Super Kawaii Mama says:

Libertad: They really are something when it comes to adding the finishing touches. I find that it is the little things like this that make you feel extra special.
Allison: Oh I did that with my nail polishes and it does look great.
Uselesslines: Oh I’d love to see a pic of that fruit bowl. Maybe you could do a little series and give us some ideas?
The Glam Housewife: You’re a regular Martha Stewart! ;)

  6. Katharine says:

Absolutely gorgeous! I’m going to try this as soon as I find a suitable container :)

  7. Bettie Booh says:

Oh, never realised the flower WASN’T the lid of the jar XD very cool effect and nicely done

  8. Grant says:

    OMFG! That is Brilliant!!!

I’m surprised that the Chanel counter hasn’t thought of it.

    :3

  9. WOW!!! I am really impressed that looks spectacular!

  10. Rosie says:

I just try and make sure that everything that enters my space fits with what I want. So if I have to live without an arm chair for 6 months while I try and find the right one, so what, it’s a sacrifice for my style.

  11. Jaede says:

I had no idea it wasn’t an actual flower. I have an old Avon powder jar and I’ll be doing this today xxx

  12. Melanie Bennet says:

Very nice indeed. Cant help but think you must have a lot of spare time on your hands though.

  13. You can sell those, you know. It’s so pretty.

    • Super Kawaii Mama says:

Meream: Nah, just like to share great ideas with you all.
Melanie Bennet: If Only! With two children and working about 40 hours a week at the moment I am lucky to get anything done around the house. But sometimes I like to pause and do something small to make my space pretty, even if their is a pile of washing in the corner the size of Everest! I suppose it is the little things that I allow my control freak to have reign over these days instead of going mad trying to keep everything like that.
      Jaede: Have fun. :)
Grant: I know – me too!

  14. Violet says:

Love it! Such a cute idea! I can’t wait to go back and raid the Anna Sui counter again *drool* The Avon powder case was such a good find!

  15. Wow, what a fantastic idea! When I saw the photos, I thought it was a craft project you’d done with a silk flower. I’m with you about making everything in your home useful and beautiful, and I love how this fulfills both criteria.

  16. Melanie Bennet says:

    That’s dedication!

  17. K-Line says:

Seriously impressive – very SKM in its retroness and so elegant (and tidy)!

  18. londyn says:

    Beautiful accents. Love them!

  19. damzel says:

Wow, they look so cute arranged like that! Thanks for example, I’m definitely going to try it out!
