You’ve spent ages reading all your favorite vintage blogs. You’ve drooled over the New Look dresses, the Victory Rolls and the perfect red lips, only to be stuck experimenting in your bedroom with very little success. “Why doesn’t it look like the pictures?” you ask yourself. What you really need is a personal tutor. Someone to hold you hand through the minefield that is the lipstick counter, to teach you how to get your rolls straight and your skirts puffy. Enter, The Lindy Charm School for Girls.

The brain child of veteran swing dancer Mistress Chrissy, The Lindy Charm School offers workshop based events to help you learn the tricks of the trade to release your inner pin up girl. A woman after my own heart, Mistress Chrissy believes in a life lived with glamour. That our sartorial selves are our calling cards and thus should be the very best we can muster. After running a swing dancing school with her husband for many years, Mistress Chrissy was often being asked for style help by her students. When they eventually retired from the school, the Lindy Charm School was born.
I spoke with Mistress Chrissy at the Love Vintage Show in Sydney,
“[The Lindy Charm School] is for girls who want to get into vintage but don’t know what their look is. It is also for girls who have been into vintage for a long time but haven’t mastered their look… It is for people with an interest in vintage fashion but who know little about fabrics and eras.”
Their three hour workshops cover a myriad of hair techniques from pin curling to victory rolls. Custom makeup for day and evening, accessorising an outfit, as well as suitable under garments for vintage clothing. Basically a really fun, girly day! Although not trained as hair or makeup artists, Mistress Chrissy and her team bring you the best results of fifteen years of tears and tantrums.
Says Mistress Chrissy, ” The Lindy Charm School is about being feminine, being glamorous, but most of all about feeling good!”
The Lindy Charm School will be in Melbourne for the weekend of the 15th & 16th of August.
More details and bookings can be made here.
Look what a stint in Charm School did for Marie Nash!

Aww I wish this was in Brisbane, it sounds like fun!
Violet: Well my dear, it just so happens that they are based in Brisbane! So you’ll have many more opportunities to join them than those of us in Melbourne. Check out the link and get in touch with Mistress Chrissy. She’d be delighted to hear from you!
Rebecca: I’m sure it will be.
Samantha: Well they were still kinder than the Trinny and Susana approach. I loved this article.
Meredith: I’ll see what I can find out for you. I’m am certain there must be something around.
Amber: Oh that’s great! So you’re a graduate then.
ASAB: You’ll be amazed at what the can teach you, and I’m sure you’d have a ball!
This looks like so much fun!
“No wonder Marie was discouraged about her looks!”
Hehe, that just makes me laugh. Makeover features are a lot more kinder nowadays compared to then!
Oh, I am so jealous of this program. Do you know of something like this in the States? Preferably in California? Or maybe she travels? I desperately would like to go to a 40s/50s finishing school.
I highly highly reccomend the lindy charm school workshop! I went along when she did one in Wellington last year to tie in with our annual swing dancing ball and it was amazing! I learnt a ton, bought some cute scarves & product, and the ladies were hilarious. And I still have my workbook I got given, which is really handy to whip out now and again….
This looks like a whole heap of fun. I would reallly like to know how to set my fringe.

That article is a scream! Oh I love this stuff SKM! Do you think I could acquire some “fascination” like Miss Nash?
Oh, and I’d love to do that workshop with the Lindy Charm School. Sounds fabulous!
DocWitch: You’d better book in fast, it is nearly full! Couldn’t have you missing out on “fascination”!
Fiona: When I find out I’ll let you know. Although personally I think it might involve lopping off a leg!
Emma: Don’t worry my dear, there may be something in the works for you too.
Retro Chick: If I hear of any your way I’ll certainly let you know.
Marianne: Yay! See you there.
Meream: I’ll let you know if and when I hear of any.
Amber: I’ve always thought that was very cool too. Much better than just number prefixes. Wish we could actually call and talk to a real operator these days.
Jaede: I’ll be posting some pics during the weekend so you can watch vicariously.
Girl Girl Kicks Butt: Excellent. It is always good to hear success stories. Send us some pics of your final ‘do’ if you have them.
I personally want to know how you lose 31 pounds in 6 weeks! Great article though and the workshop sounds fabulous
Perth misses out on everything
I would love to go to something like this.
Oh that sounds fantastic.
I think it might be a bit far for me to travel from the UK, but I’d love to go to something like this closer to home!
I am going to the Sunday school, and I can’t wait
This sounds amazing! I wonder if there is something similar in my country…
It’s really too bad places like this aren’t around in the States. Many of our girls over here could really use it!!
Don’t you love that the old telephone number for the Suscess School starts out with the word “Plaza?” I wonder what dictated your phone number word…I know from watching old TV shows some were Circle, but I think those are the only two I’ve heard of–and I’m guessing they were for New Yorkers.
Sounds like a wonderful finishing school. What fun.
I also want to know how to lose 31 pounds in 6 weeks !!
I’ve done their charm school twice in Canberra and just love it! I get a whole bunch of girls and we just have the best time and then go out all dolled up. Perfect.
