Quite some time ago, I was asked by a loyal reader to show you my collection of handbags, specifically those I use every day. My handbag collection, while never intending to be an actual collection, has grown over the years to contain far too many pieces to show you in one post. I don’t consider myself a collector of anything really. That is, I never go out looking to add to a collection, or track down items to complete a set. Everything I buy has to be either useful or beautiful (thank you William Morris), so instead of just amassing many of the same type of objects, I choose to replace many everyday functional items with their collectible counterparts.
This is how I have ended up with so many handbags, shoes and clothes – all useful and beautiful in their own right. There is no one label I seek out, nor do I choose on price alone. The things that make it into my “collections” are those that resonate with me. The cheap, the cheerful, the hideously expensive and heirloom worthy, and the sentimental few that can be none of the afore mentioned things, but are still special to me.
So here you are, a peek into the workhorses of my handbag collection.

Fendi Spy Bag. Possibly the biggest handbag splurge in my wardrobe. A few years back I decided it was time to find a great all round, quality black bag with character. I loved it’s soft supple leather and the harder edge of the braided handles. It fits a surprising amount (although without any pockets it can be hard to find things), even carrying a mini notebook, phone and nappies is all possible at the same time! I’ll admit I was a little miffed when it became an “IT” bag, and I had a moment of wanting to hide it away so as not to be seen as trying too hard. But then I figured, “what the hell!”. I bought it because I loved it, I still love it, and it is probably on my arm 5 days out of seven every week. So that is investment dressing for you.
Black Moc Alligator by Jag. I’ve read in some of my vintage wardrobe books, that it was considered appropriate to carry alligator for more sporting pursuits and of an afternoon. Although I don’t stick to these rules, I wanted to find something with a 1950′s vintage shape, but able to hold a little more than a traditional framed bag. This number by JAG fits the bill perfectly. The straps are long enough to wear over the shoulder, but also to carry by hand without it looking too long. This bag often comes out to dinner as it is big enough to hold what I need for a night out, but not big enough to schlep around all the unnecessary bits and pieces..

Moc Alligator with Bamboo Handles. Seeing a theme here? Black and shiny all seem to catch my eye on a regular basis. This is one of those cheep and cheerful numbers that has earned a place in my top spots. It is a ridged framed bag so it is limited in what it can carry. But the wonderful handles and the great shape make up for that.
Hello Kitty. It wouldn’t be my collection without a bit of kawaii now would it? there are several more bags in the collection along this theme, but Kitty gets the most outings. She’s a great size, subtle tones, can be slung across the body or over the shoulder. Her not so subtle Louis Vuitton rip off print always makes people look twice which in a way is what I like about her. The fact that Kitty doesn’t have to be hot pink to grab attention, but when you do the double take and realise it’s Kitty there, the outfit takes on a different tone.

Sugar Jones – Iron Maiden. I love love love this bag! What can I say, it really speaks for itself. Gingham lining, lace trim, bamboo handles and a serious 1990′s Iron Maiden print. Superb.
Ostrich Clutch. I have no recollection of when or where I found this one. It is simple, sleek, ice blue and a great evening option when I need to carry more than money and a lipstick. It does have a hidden shoulder strap, but I generally like the lines when it is carried by hand better.

Vintage Lizard Skin. Gorgeous, vintage and rather impractical. Like so many vintage framed bags, it isn’t large enough to even carry my wallet, but with a little down sizing I do love the lady like proportions of this one. Fantastic for moments when I feel like wearing gloves too.
Vintage GloMesh. Perfect for cocktail hour, evenings, weddings; a great all rounder. In a neutral tone rather than the popular gold or silver versions, this bag has more versatility. The clasp and frame shape give it a more deco feel, so this one works well with some of my more late 20′s early 30′s ensembles.
And there you have it. A brief glimpse into the well loved and well used part of my handbag collection. Now that I look at them all, it seems my personality is well reflected in the eclectic style of these pieces.
What does your handbag choice say about you?

I’m not sure what my handbag says about me. I alternate between a massive carry-my-life-with-me butter leather tote or smaller shoulder bags/clutches that can only carry the bare necessities (keys wallet phone lippy mirror).
I like the thought of minimal junk in my bag, so perhaps I need a smaller bag to force me to economise…. Until I need to haul nappies around with me that is!

Fantastic post – we rarely get to see your handbags
Eeek, the blog ate my post! Upshot is that I love this collection of elegant bags…
Love the mesh one! Thank you for the list. All my bags tend to be boho messenger bags but I’m inspired to get a handbag to match my glamorous outfits!
Every girl needs some ostrich, lizard and glomesh in her handbag collection. At the moment I’m in love with my vintage cream ostrich skin bag. Because it doesn’t fit my wallet, I think my bag says that I’m terribly disorganised as I’m always scratching through it to find my credit card.
wow, you have a handbag collection like me. I have tons and my husband glares at me and tells me to get rid of some. lol
Fab collection, when’s the next instalment?
I adore the croc and bamboo one. May have to copy your idea at some point and show off some of my own!
Ooh comment adding went wrong! Well to summarise, you are right about the frame bags lovely though they are they are barely big enough for a credit card and a lipstick. My favourite of my collection is a mini-carpet bag with a gorgeous brass peg and chain fastener. It is the little sister of my ginormous Mary Poppins-style carpet bag which is capable of holding enough stuff for a weekend (if one doesn’t go to town on the packing)!
Love the GloMesh one! I didn’t get why you had labelled the Hello Kitty one that until I read the explanation!
I’m afraid that what my handbags are saying about me is that I’m lazy, because I’ve been using the same one for weeks! You’ve inspired me to pull out all the lovely bags I’ve been neglecting and put them into circulation again.
Funny you should post about this, as I’m doing a bit of a ‘handbag overhaul’ at present….this entails weeding out and selling underused/unloved ones, and treating myself to a few classic beauties. I’m a classic/minimal/touch of 70′s art&craft style person, so my handbag collection is currently aiming to be a pared back, highly rotated, good quality collection. I think this reflects my style/personality! xx
PS Love love love your alligator bags and the mesh one.
The Louis Vuitton rip off bags won’t be around for long. They aren’t very flexible about their designs being…”borrowed”
