joan hair Joan Holloways Hair

You’ve asked, you’ve waited and the time has come. Here is a BRAND SPANKING NEW hair tutorial to help you achieve a great Joan Holloway style up do with longer hair.  Of course, given that my hair is just past my shoulders and I don’t have a fringe (bangs), I have to find ways to achieve these looks without lopping it off.  But you can still achieve the look I’ve created here with shorter hair, it just takes a little tweaking.

As usual I’m here to answer any questions and take requests.  So find yourself a comfortable spot, sit back and enjoy the first of my MAD MEN STYLE TUTORIALS.

LOVE IT! I can’t wait for Betty’s! I know it has to be on it’s way. ;)

  2. This is really fabulous. The final result looks quite complicated, but really it’s rather straight forward isn’t it?
    I do have a couple of questions for you;
    * I’m very much a French Roll kind of girl, but have always been aware that I practice my own ’simplified’ version. Are you able to please do a tutorial on achieving a classic French Roll?
    * What is a ‘Melrose’ clip? Maybe you could do a small glossery of hair accessories on the side bar?
Gosh I am demanding today. Sorry! I feel like I’ve struck gold, as I’ve been wanting to know how to do upstyles like this for years!
Thank you Super Kawaii Mama xxx

  3. I wish I had hair thick like yours! Mine are so thin. Really enjoy your post!

  4. Lilac says:

What a pro! I’ve got to check out your other hair tutorials now.

One question I have is do you find it hard to comb out the knots backcombing makes? Is there some kind of trick to combing them out properly? And is it too damaging to your hair?

I love volume but I’m always hesitant to backcomb because my hair as it isn’t in great condition to start with. I’m even tempted to hunt down some Bumpits (google them! they look so trashy/fantastic) so I don’t have to backcomb.

  5. Rebecca says:

can’t wait to watch this when I get home!
Oh and I am working on an entry to your competition!

  6. kayleigh says:

I’m going to try this out this weekend! It’s really impressive that you did that in ten minutes; I watched an interview with Christina Hendricks recently in which she stated that she spends three hours a day getting her hair styled when filming Mad Men.

    • Super Kawaii Mama says:

Kayleigh: Yes, it is amazing. So many people think I must spend an age getting ready, but I can tell you I get do the whole shebang in 30 minutes or under. As you can see, I filmed this in real time, so it is very achievable.
      Rebecca: Looking forward to it.
Lilac: My secret for getting out the backcombing is using my children’s detangling spray. It smells of strawberries, costs $4 and does the trick perfectly. As you can imagine, with the bleached piece I have to be super careful with mine to so i don’t add to the breakage. I generally don’t backcomb much and use “rats” instead. I’ll check out those products you mentioned.
Skylar: Its a blessing and a curse, but I’ve achieved this one people with thinner hair using a thickening spray and a root pumping product. It can be done but the secret is all in the preparation. Oh and i should add that it works best when your hair isn’t freshly washed. Even a bit dirty is good as the style hides the sins.
Mlle. Lady Finger:Great ideas. I’ll work on those and add a new section into the hair tips just for you. :)

Dolly Dahl: But of course. :)

  7. Sharon says:

    Hi SKM!

Was there something about a Mad Men Dress Up competition mentioned in your you tube vid description?? I can’t find it here on your blog??!

    Sharon

    • Super Kawaii Mama says:

Sharon: Hi there. Yes, there sure is a competition. You’ll find the big yellow contest button on the right hand side menu, second from the top. If you’re reading in a reader your won’t be able to see it. BTW, I took those handbag photos yesterday so the post you requested is coming up.

  8. I am going for dinner at my in-laws tonight, and was going to wear some 60s capris, I think I am going to do this on my hair now :)
You look so pretty in that video, I like to imagine you are a real 50s Hollywood star.

  9. Esz says:

Love this look! So envious of you lovely ladies that have the long locks to create these styles!
Can’t wait to see more of the Mad Men styles :-D

  10. Miz says:

I really enjoyed that! I usually wear my hair down, since it’s soo long, but I’ve had trim of about 2 1/2 inches, and cut a side swept fringe in too, so this will be perfect for my meeting on friday! I host burlesque nights, and always like to look the part!

    Thank you!

Oh, and since you couldn’t find me on twitter, here’s a link, hope it helps!

      Miz: Found you!
Esz: There are loads in the works so I’ll have to dish them up slowly. :)
MR: Ohh nice. Hope to see pics of that one too. I like to pretend I’m a real 1950’s Hollywood star too. Makes life so much more interesting with a bit of drama.

  11. Jaede says:

Fabulous !!!! If only I had that much hair………..

  12. birdie says:

I’ll (finally) de-lurk and say ‘hello!’ After watching this tutorial, I went and watched all your others and am now officially inspired! My hair is much shorter and finer than yours but I think with some work I’ll be able to do my own versions of your styles.

Thanks for being a great source of inspiration and style eye-candy!

    Birdie

    • Super Kawaii Mama says:

Birdie: Hi! It is so great to see some of my lurkers coming out. I do have a lot of hair which I why I don’t have to set it first to achieve much volume. But you’ll find if you use a thickening product and maybe some hot rollers first, it will give the hair a bit more body to work with. Can’t wait to see what you come up with.

  13. Crystal says:

I just loved the tutorial. I would really like to try this style, but I’m not sure if it would work on my length of hair which is about 2 inches below my ears. Do you think this style could still be accomplished with shorter hair like mine?

    • Super Kawaii Mama says:

Crystal: I think you’d find it hard to get the remaining pieces up into a french roll. Instead, you could do the back combed piece and secure it, then with the remainder of the hair (the part I put into the final french roll) I suggest doing a soft set on large hot rollers, curling it under. Only use one row though as your not looking for curl per se, just a nice smooth way to turn the ends under. Let me know how you go, or send me a picture! (my conact is on the ABOUT page).

  14. floraposte says:

That will take practice but it is a great effect! I can’t believe you get your whole look together in 30 minutes, you always look so polished.

  15. phenolicfanatic says:

Can I second the request for the classic french roll method- I have always wondered! Thanks for your great site- I have lurked for a while now :)
    michele xx

  16. Honey says:

Thanks for this advice! I’ll try to achieve similar one. And your hair is so very beautiful!

  17. [...] Want some amazing vintage hair? Super Kawaii Mama put together a tutorial on how to achieve the same style as my favorite foxy redhead, Joan [...]

  18. Sandra says:

Hot Mama! Lovely, lovely tutorial!! I love the volume you can get with your gorgeous hair doll. xoxo.

  19. Lisa says:

    Have you tried these things?
    “Big happy hair”..supposedly.

    https://www.bumpits.com/

    • Super Kawaii Mama says:

Lisa: No I haven’t seen those in Australia. When I need loads of volume I use a ‘rat’. It looks like to get the height I’d need, you still have to back comb a bit with these inventions.

  20. PinupFinland says:

You look just like Joan Holloway.
Why don’t you dye your hair red ;-)
    Lovely video.

    • Super Kawaii Mama says:

PinupFinland: I have thought about having my hair red, but after being almost every colour available over the course of my life so far, I have learnt that it is the very dark colours that suit me best. So I stick to what I know… until I get bored again. ;)

  21. Rebecca says:

Thank you! I was Joan for Halloween and used your technique to create her hair. It all came out very lovely, though I couldn’t find a decent temporary hair color. After searching several stores, the only one-wash color I could find was a spray in bright, cartoonish red. If anyone has any ideas to create a natural-looking red next time, please share them here.

I’m so happy I just discovered your blog! I feel right at home with others who love vintage fashion as much as I do. You’re now on my RSS feed! :)

    • Super Kawaii Mama says:

Rebecca: Ahh the hair colour! I never find the temp ones work well. If I need a change these days I just go in for a wig. It is faster and simpler. According to the MM hair stylist, Joan’s actual hair couldn’t be achieved without the aid of clip in pieces just as they used in that era.
