Vintage hair styles often look so complicated. I’m regularly asked how to achieve that “Victory Roll” effect which looks so great but can be quite scary for novices. Rather than showing you a more complex version, I’ve come up with a quick tutorial that will show you a short cut way to get that “Victory Roll” effect in about 30 seconds. Well the hair takes about 30 seconds, me talking takes much longer, as usual. I will eventually post a tutorial showing how to achieve a more extreme version of this look, (for all you hard core Rockabellas) but for now this is one that is more translatable for a modern look too.

And if you’re after another piece of fun to start your week with, try this quiz to find out which 1930′s film star you are. No surprises with my results!

I did your quiz…. I hoped to get Marilyn Monroe, turns out I’m more like Katharine Hepburn, which is better :)
Thanks for the tutorial too, I’m going to try it on the weekend.

  2. chloe says:

    Really thank you.
I have such a difficult time to try to do those french rolls with other tutorials.
For next time please can you help me,
i try to do the wave style look (the Rita VT one).
I can’t manage to do it by myself, i need someone to help me to do the curles.
I would be thankful if you can help me to learn how to do this style without anyones help.

  3. zeghsy says:

ooh thank you! and i love your accent. it’s just so much fun to listen to. :)

  4. Lea-Ann says:

Love it. I will be working on these faux Victory rolls tomorrow!

  5. TheSundayBest says:

I know I don’t really know you, but Joan seems a little wrong to me. I’ll have to research those 30′s films to find out.

  6. Fleur de Guerre says:

You should be on the telly you know! Fab as ever and I love your accent.

  7. lady coveted says:

    haha, i’m bette davis.
    ;)

thanks for the hair tutorial… i only wish my hair was long enough…a nd thick enough… bah!

  8. Kristen says:

Ooohh… I’m Marlene Dietrich! Rock on!

I have very short hair, but I love watching your tutorials. They make my day.

  9. Super Kawaii Mama says:

Li/ve in both senses: Now she was one amazing woman!
Chloe: I’ll see what I can do. the is actually much harder to achieve than it looks. Partly because putting your own long hair in hot rollers and getting the pattern correct is very difficult.
Zeghsy: Accent? What accent? Lol :)
    Le-ann: Oh pictures please!
The Sunday Best: It was the accompanying description that nailed me. I have quite the wicked side and I’m always up for a bit of smack down should the need arise. :)
Fleur de Guerre: Perhaps you and I could host our own show and be the “Trinny and Susanna” of the glamour set. Ha haha. :)
Lady Coveted: It makes you wonder just what parts of their personality / persona we fit.
Kristen: Excellent, now you have a muse to channel for Fall, either that or Halloween inspiration!

  10. enc says:

I’ve never been brave enough to try any old hairstyles before, but now I’ve got the tutorial so I can try!
Thanks for demonstrating the techniques for us.

  11. Lady Melbourne says:

Fab, fab, fab, so glad I can say I learnt mine from one of the best!

Thank you so much for the tutorial, mama! I always have trouble pinning my fringe back though.. it ends up looking like a mess!

I did the quiz too – Greta Garbo! I'm happy with that :) Cant get enough of quizes…

    ?

  13. Theresa says:

I can’t believe how easy that is, many thanks :o ) Wonderful tutorial as ever. Interesting quiz, I got Greta Garbo, if only I had the style too.

  14. ~TessaScoffs says:

I’m going to try that hair for Les Petits’ school fundraiser next month. With some red lippy.
Turns out I’m Claudette Colbert. Hmmmm.

  15. casey says:

I love this quick version of a Victory Roll!! :) I can’t wait to try it today… lol! And may I say: bravo to doing something a little different for going to the gym!!! :) I’m one of those gals who can’t abide by slicking my hair back into a ponytail either (even though I don’t go to the gym; I’m too shy–I just work out at home! lol). There is something a bit more glam about doing your hair nicely–makes it a bit more exciting to exercise too. hehe!

    Thanks for another fantastic tutorial!

  16. Mrs Munster says:

Thank you for this tutorial. My “victory rolls” (or rockin’ rolls as I call them) always takes ages. This is a great way to do them quickly. Many thanks :)

  17. Lea-Ann says:

Head over to my blog to see the pix of my roll. I did one big one in the front. I’m lovin’ it! Thank you!

  18. Gladis says:
